The charming Middlebury Inn is located on the main village square in the heart of town, within walking distance of the Middlebury College campus and an hour's drive from Burlington, Fort Ticonderoga and the Green Mountain National Forest. It is popular with parents visiting Middlebury students, but has a lot to offer the discerning leisure traveler, with an ideal location for walking, biking, skiing and running. A posh -- yet complimentary -- afternoon tea is served every day from 2-5 p.m., and a roaring fireplace in the lobby welcomes guests through the doors.

Listed by Zagat as one of the five oldest hotels in America, the Middlebury Inn’s building originated in 1827 when it was a public house. Today, the rooms are spread across four buildings and vary greatly. Those in the main house and Porter Mansion have high ceilings, marble fireplaces, and Victorian and antique accents. The two modern Courtyard Annexes offer more no-frills accommodation, but are pet friendly. Wi-Fi is complimentary, and guests get free access to the nearby Middlebury Fitness center.

Morgan’s Tavern, the inn’s popular restaurant showcases local artisan cheeses, meat suppliers and small Vermont farmers – think Vermont chicken cordon bleu, Fryslan Farms beef and pork meatloaf and wild mushroom ravioli. The tavern is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Enjoyed Most: The off site fitness center.
Other Comments: The room was very small and so was the bathroom. The bed was very hard. The comforter was very heavy. No ice machine. We checked out a day early because it was such a disappointment.
