Why We Love This Hotel

  • Located along the Chicago River, the hotel has impressive city, river and lakefront views from all sides thanks to its all-glass triangular design
  • Literally steps from the Mag Mile — just turn left on Wacker Drive, or in the warmer months, take the Chicago River Walk
  • Guests get the best views while working up a sweat in the hotel's rooftop fitness center on the 43rd floor
  • "Ultra-silent, generously sized rooms ... feel like condos" (Fodor's), and come with enormous Chicago-style windows overlooking the city

While Swissotel is an international brand, the only one in the continental United States is in Chicago, and it is rich with European touches throughout — think sleek, contemporary room design, plus sculptural elements like the "bubble" chandeliers in the lobby. You'll also find a living wall growing year round on the first floor — all of which makes the hotel a popular destination for globe-trotting travelers and locals alike.

Rooms offer plenty of space to stretch — standard rooms start at about 320 square feet — and feature flat-panel TVs, Wi-Fi, in-room coffee makers and plenty of natural light via Chicago-style windows (naturally), plus a separate tub and shower in the bathrooms. All rooms come with oversized hard-wood desks too, which combined with the view, might make you feel more like an executive than a tourist.

The hotel's location is about as good as it gets for a downtown trip: You're within walking distance of the Mag Mile, the Loop and within eyesight of Navy Pier. The hotel is also one of very few attached to the city's Pedway system, meaning guests can get from the "L" to the hotel lobby without ever going outside — great during winter or in inclement weather (it is the Windy City, after all).

location was great

1) we were charged resort fee but have to pay for bottled water in the room - not really sure what we got out of the resort fee 2) coffee in the lobby was removed too early 3) our room was not cleaned daily (supposedly due to COVID - I've stayed in other hotels during COVID and rooms were cleaned) 4) I asked if they had yoga mat and no one returned my call 5) one night I couldn't sleep because of smell of marijuana seeping through the vents in our room, 6) although we were provided a late checkout at 1pm, anytime beyond 1 pm is being charged at $50/hr, which I think is a bit much

Need to resume daily housekeeping. It was a hassle to request garbage removal, towel & toiletry replacements. I like to return to a “made up room”

Check in was straight forward. The hotel has a unique system of dedicating an elevator going up to your floor to minimize COVID exposure from others.

No valet parking at all and we paid for a king bed but ended up with two doubles for three people. They said when booking through travelzoo, the hotel decides what kind of room the guest get regardless of what was purchased.

The elevator system needs to be adjusted. At the bank of elevators, instead of pushing the usual up or down button, one has to enter his/her floor number where you are assigned one of six possible elevator cars. This is the easy part. The trouble is that the elevator computer doesn't know how many people are going to any particular floor (maybe it assumes 2?) so it often assigns too many passengers to the (elevator) car. It can and does during busy times assign 8-10 people on multiple floors to the same car. Some people will see it's too crowded and wait for the next car, but the elevator still stops at all of the assigned floors even if those people are not on the car.
