Situated on Michigan's famous Mackinac Island, Mission Point Resort was recently named the Best Resort in Michigan by Conde Nast Traveler. Guests can relax on the resort's iconic 4-acre Great Lawn, fly a kite, play some bocce or simply take a seat in one of the 81 Adirondack chairs and take in the lakefront view.

All rooms feature free Wi-Fi, in-unit coffeemakers and garden or lake views. Rooms in the three-story Straits Lodge feature entry foyers, a vanity area and are a little closer to downtown Mackinac. All guests can go for a swim in the outdoor pool or relax in the hot tub, go on a complimentary garden or resort history tour or go for a "Sun-Up" hike to nearby Arch Rock.

The hotel's Chianti restaurant features northern Italian cuisine including fresh pasta made in-house; casual dining can be found at the Round Island Bar & Grill with omelets made to order in the morning and cocktails and burgers later on during the day. Guests can dine alfresco on the patio or around the firepits at the Bistro on the Greens or sip sparkling wine at the Reserve Wine Bar. Need a pick-me-up? Grab a latte at Boxwood Coffeeshop.

The resort's Lakeside Salon & Spa is the only full-service wellness retreat on the Island, featuring massage, facials, nail services and body treatments. We definitely recommend renting a bike to ride along the shoreline of the the famously car-free island. Guests can also test their short game at the on-site 18-hole putting course, or, after the sun sets, take in a classic film at the the turn-of-the-century movie theater -- the only movie theater on the island.

We were quite disappointed, however, with the room. Although we were upgraded to a room in the main lodge, the carpeting was horribly stained. I would hope they replace it before next season.

The view of Lake Huron from Mission Point is beautiful. The landscaping is beautiful. The fire places, games and books in the main lodge are very nice.

Our room was not part of the main lodge so we had quite a walk to get back and forth. The toilet ran constantly one afternoon , then it quit so I didn’t call for maintenance. Early the next morning, it ran again for several hours so I reported the problem when we checked out. There was a small nail sticking out of the back of the wicker chair which we didn’t know was there until my husband tried to move the chair a bit and cut his hand on the nail. The seating in the room consisted of one hard desk chair and this wicker chair which had an old pad which was worn and made me feel like I was slipping off the chair when I tried to sit in it to read. The mattresses were less than comfortable. On a more positive note, the breakfast buffet was very nice and the wait staff was terrific. We had dinner in the grill one evening and the food was of poor quality. I had the tandoori chicken lettuce wraps with mango salsa. Sounds good, right? The chicken tasted several days old and I had to search for the mango. My husband ordered spaghetti and meatballs. Who can mess that up? It was “blah”. What a disappointment. Also, although Travelzoo advertised the nightly price as $119. When all of the fees and taxes were added, we paid almost $150. Per night. We would have been much better off staying in Mackinaw City and just spending the day on the island. We will never stay at Mission Point Resort again.

The service was great. Everyone was friendly and polite.

For the rate you pay for the rooms they are incredibly outdated and small. It was a window AC unit that was very noisy and woke me up during the night, along with making it hard to maintain a comfortable room temperature. It was just my husband and I in a double room and it was hard to move around in the room with just the two of us let alone if we had our children with us. The resort overall was nice and staff was friendly, rooms are outdated for the price you’re paying.
