Set on a private peninsula about thirty miles from Los Angeles, Portofino Hotel & Marina, A Noble House Hotel, is a sleepy resort surrounded by beach wildlife and natural views. This quaint retreat on the ocean has an old-fashioned charm, and there’s easy access to the beach. It’s also conveniently placed for visiting many of the area’s best attractions, including the dining and entertainment of Hermosa Beach, which is five minutes away by car.

Borrow one of the hotel’s free bikes and ride the oceanfront path – it’s flat and runs for 20 miles -- all the way up to Santa Monica, or visit upscale Manhattan Beach and the shops in Manhattan Village, both five miles away. Kids will love King Harbor, next door to the hotel and home to a colony of California sea lions.

The hotel’s restaurant Baleen is a "a most welcome addition to the South Bay dining scene," according to Fodor’s. The menu focuses on ingredients from the sea, with dishes such as fish tacos, lobster sliders and ahi tuna nicoise, and there’s a daily happy hour (3-7 p.m.) for discounted drinks and apps.

A special make-your-own bloody mary bar -- self-service and all-you-can-drink – is available on weekends (from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) and stocked with flavored vodkas, spices and garnishes. There’s also a heated outdoor pool and a small fitness room.

True to its Italian town namesake, the hotel’s rooms have a Mediterranean flavor. Each is done in beach colors and has a private patio or balcony. Some overlook the marina, but the best views are toward the ocean. Opt for a suite for a four-poster bed, double-sided fireplace and claw-foot tub.

From the press:
  • "Interiors are beachy but sophisticated" -- Fodor's
  • "Features include a diminutive swimming pool and a fine restaurant/lounge, Baleen, which feels nautical by day and romantic by night" -- Lonely Planet

Enjoyed Most: Everyone was great and very accommodating to our requests. They had several great suggestions about places to see and where to eat in the area. I would definitely stay here again when ever back in the Los Angeles.

Enjoyed Most: The hotel was decorated very nicely
Other Comments: the fact that I am still trying to get my finalized bill as it is still not correct. When I checked out on Sunday they had a power outage and could not provide me a bill. They were supposed to email me a bill but I never received one until I called and asked again. The billing dept sent me one but it was still incorrect as I was not corrected any of the breakfast meals I was charged. The Manager was supposed to provide me some credits as the Saturday night our entire floor reeked of pot. There was a wedding and they did not seem to be able to control the guests. I was also charged for the room upgrade of $30 each nite

Enjoyed Most: We had a beautiful ocean front room with a jacuzzi tub. We had a lovely view. Tub was fantastic. The decor of the room was gorgeous. And they even provided ear plugs for the barking seals at night.
Other Comments: Nothing, this place was perfect.
