One of the World's Best Hotels sits north of metro Detroit in Birmingham, in the form of the luxurious Townsend hotel.

All guest rooms -- fully renovated in 2015 -- feature plush bedding with Egyptian cotton sheets and down pillows, marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and 49-inch flat-panel TVs. Guests staying in a Luxury Suite also receive extra living room space separated from the bedroom by French doors; select suites have kitchens and fireplaces. Basic Wi-Fi is complimentary, as is access to the hotel's fitness center.

Dining options include chocolate tortes, French macarons and other baked delights at the Townsend Bakery, as well as a Contemporary American menu at the Rugby Grille available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Rugby Grille features a steakhouse-style menu with wagyu strip steak, dry-aged rib eye and Colorado lambchops, as well as a decadent Wagyu hamburger topped with black truffles and seared foie gras. The hotel's daily afternoon tea service comes highly recommended, as does the "gentleman's tea" with flights of whiskey and beer.

The Townsend sits in downtown Birmingham, an upscale suburb of Detroit that earns praise as one of Travel + Leisure's "Coolest Suburbs Worth a Visit" -- they report that it's "not uncommon" to rub elbows with Detroit Red Wings players and visiting celebrities at the shops, boutiques and restaurants nearby (including Michigan native Madonna).

Nearby you'll find the Somerset Collection of stores, including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Louis Vuitton; you're also a quick drive to Tigers games at Comerica Park, Lions games at Ford Field and downtown Detroit.

From the press:
  • "Impresses guests with its classy atmosphere, afternoon high tea and attentive staff" -- U.S. News and World Report Travel
  • "Visiting celebrities often fill the rooms of this downtown hotel across from Shain Park" -- Fodor's

Would have preferred 20.00 credit to restaurant vs mini bar which we did not use. Bed was made awkwardly, had difficulty pulling up covers, odd! Also did not get the morning paper as promised. Unusual for this hotel to miss these details! Perhaps it was due to the holiday?
