Overview

The Avalon Hotel is a classic 1940s property facing the water on South Beach’s Ocean Drive and is "one of the neighborhood’s Art Deco attractions," says National Geographic Magazine. In the heart of all the action, the property nevertheless maintains a calm that belies its location, making it popular with those looking for a quiet escape.

Fresh seafood and mojitos are the specialties at the hotel's popular Zagat-rated restaurant, A Fish Called Avalon, where the evening menu ranges from macadamia-crusted snapper to sake- and tarragon-glazed lobster tails. Meals can be taken in the art deco dining room or on the breezy street-side terrace where there are live Latin-Caribbean performances every night.

Guests receive free access to the outdoor pool at the South Seas hotel, 10 blocks away on Collins Avenue. Shielded by palm trees, the saltwater pool is surrounded by loungers and cabanas and is heated year-round. There's also direct beachfront access at the South Seas and a poolside café for burgers, salads and frozen cocktails. There's no in-house gym, but across the road, Lummus Park is a jogger's paradise and discounted passes to the local gym are available.

Well-maintained rooms are "simple and pleasant," notes Lonely Planet -- opt for a room on one of the higher floors as Ocean Drive can be noisy. Upgraded rooms are larger and have uninterrupted ocean views. Orchids, iPod docking stations and a European continental breakfast are also included.

Get to know the coastal metropolis from land, air and sea with top attractions, luxe spa days and evening dinners out on the town.

From the press:
  • "This hotel is perhaps known more for the white-and-yellow 1955 Lincoln convertible parked out front than for its rooms, which are simple and pleasant" -- Lonely Planet
  • "One of the neighborhood's art deco attractions" -- National Geographic Magazine
  • "Thumping bass and wet T-shirt contests might rage around you, but the hotel maintains an aura of Art Deco calm -- as does its excellent restaurant" -- Frommer's

Staff was extremely helpful and always with a smile.

Room 122 was extremely small. VERY tight for a family of 4 (kids...16&13). Staff made stay enjoyable. Travelzoo special rate included a bottle of Proseco and a box of chocolates. Upon arrival neither of these things were in our room. Had a quick conversation with the front desk and he took care of it. The next day we got our for proseco and Godiva chocolates. We also ordered takeout one evening but by the time it got to the hotel, it was cold. The front desk very happily found a way to heat up our food even though a microwave was not available. The best part about this hotel was its staff, location and proximity to the beach. It is a very short safe walk across the street to the beach. The beach was surprisingly clean.

The location--across the street from the beach board walk, and in the center of the Deco South Beach hotel/restaurant scene.
Other Comments
The room was small, but adequate. Breakfast was fabulous, and held in the dining room of the restaurant which overlooked the beach boardwalk--very pleasant. One downside was the hotel did not have the TravelZoo rate when we initially checked in, but they were able to work it out after a few phone calls.

Location was key.

Continental breakfast included, this was a surprise. Valet parking was not included, this was also a surprise. Pillows not very comfortable, room very small but clean.

The location.
Other Comments
The power kept going out in the bathroom every time you plugged anything in. The room smelled of mildew. The carpets were very dirty. The bonus box of chocolates was clearly very old and were inedible.
