O'Hare Airport is about an hour's drive northwest, while Midway Airport is about a half hour's drive (assuming traffic is decent, which in Chicago, can be hard to predict). A tower designed like a champagne bottle seems like a fine home for a hotel with a reputation for drawing rock stars and partygoers. The Hard Rock Hotel Chicago occupies the historic Carbide and Carbon Building, its art-deco exterior clad in deep green terracotta while the gold trim on top evokes the foil on top of a bottle of bubbly.

The hotel showcases gems from its collection of musical memorabilia, from John Lennon's leather trench coat to Prince's sinuous white guitar. The lobby and rooms have rock star touches like alligator skin walls, a giant gramophone, and wall-size photos of top stars. The hotel lends guests Fender guitars for free, for an in-room jam session (piped through headphones, don't worry, not through floor-rattling amplifiers).

The building sits right on Michigan Avenue. Only two blocks north, the avenue crosses a historic bridge over the Chicago River before reaching the Tribune Tower and the main stretch of Magnificent Mile shopping. Two blocks south of the hotel rises the swirling silver panels of Frank Gehry's band shell, anchoring Millennium Park's lawns, gardens and art installations.

Fuel up at Chuck's restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and features an Iron Chef-winning hamburger. The hotel recently replaced the Angels and Kings bar with Mr. Brown's Lounge, a Jamaican-themed restaurant serving jerk chicken and fried plantains to the tune of reggae jams.

Enjoyed Most: We really enjoyed staying there a few years ago, but this time we were very disappointed. The hotel seems worn out.
Other Comments: From the very beginning of our experience it was a disappointment. We received a key card to get into our room on the 23rd floor and our first attempt to open the door failed, then our second, and third etc. Finally, my husband went down to get a different key card. Well, guess what? It still didn't work. Down he went again, this time to return with the manager who couldn't get the card to work either. He opened the door with his key card, so we did get in. The manager told us to keep the card and someone would come up to fix the door while we were out to dinner and to a concert. We came back from the concert and we were tired. Once again, we go to the 23rd floor and once again we cannot get in. Down we go and we get another key card. Finally, it worked. This was not the way we wanted to spend our time and it shouldn't have happened. The rooms also need to be redone. It is old and not the cleanest. There was a constant noise the entire night like an elevator going up and down.

Enjoyed Most: Amazing staff and great customer service!
Other Comments: The room I booked for our group was nice, but a little small for all of us. Amanda was able to offer us an upgrade to a suite for the remainder of our stay, and it was perfect!

Enjoyed Most: Location and the pillows
Other Comments: View from room was right at eye level with the heating/cooling units on the next building. The tablet that would have given us hotel information was not charged and it took 10 minutes for the front desk to send up hotel restaurant menus instead of a charged tablet. BTW, after we got the tablet charged, information such as check out time was not even included. The FAQ section was empty. In addition, for the Hard Rock Cafe, a music themed hotel, having only 4 music stations on the tv was pretty lame and two of them were the same.
