The manager, Kevin, was the hardest worker at the Heathman. He was very kind to us and helped us in more than one way. We will definitely come back to the Heathman.

We were very impressed with the historic aspect of the hotel. It felt wonderful sitting in the lounge area looking at the beautiful woodwork and enjoying the comfortable seating. The kitchen and dining were undergoing some renovation so the menu was limited. We just ate breakfast there because it was included in our package but not all items on menu were done well...the roasted potatoes were the size of grapes and way overdone. Otherwise we were very pleased with service and the deal from Travelzoo was great.

The hotel is under new management and there are clear growing pains associated with that. Communication was conflicting and not on point. The restaurant was down a chef and several errors occurred from the kitchen. The menu was not accurate with the website. Still, the hotel is beautiful a and the staff were trying hard to make up for management.

Overall our experience was good but there were some things that didn't go well. First of all, valet parking was a challenge. The designated area was full for an extended time. And when I asked about it I was told to just park on the street or in a parking garage. However, they allowed us to check in early, which was nice and then valet ended up working out. Also, the deal stated that the (waived) resort fee included a $15 credit to the on-site restaurant plus breakfast, however we were told that we didn't get the $15 credit BECAUSE th we resort fee was raised. So either the deal was listed incorrectly on travelzoo, or the hotel misrepresented the deal. It was only $15, but still. The room was nice and comfortable and quiet and had obviously been recently renovated. The restaurant hours were listed as closing at 11 on Saturday but they were actually closed at 10 so we had to go somewhere else. But the location is great! Right in downtown within walking distance of many things. The hotel was very clean. The lobby area had plenty of seating, and a library that they didn't even tell us about was on the mezzanine level. Finally, I didn't get my final bill until a few hours after checkout so it was a good thing the charges were correct.

With the half-price valet parking, breakfast included, and waiver of the $30 extra fee for internet etc., this was a great deal. The hotel is beautiful, and typical of original downtown hotels, rooms are small but comfortable. Location makes it easy to wander downtown. The $30 showed up on our invoice, but a quick call got it refunded.

We enjoyed the stay on the quiet 9th floor room. Great location for walking around old town.

The room didn't have hand soap at the bathroom sink or wash clothes. They did bring us some. The morning we were leaving the sewer smell started coming up through the toilet. They sent a repair man to look at it and we checked out.

I enjoyed the hotel and location, but they clearly are not all on the same page as far as implementing the package for parking, breakfast, etc. I had three breakfasts, all billed differently and I am still waiting for an adjustment to reflect the valet parking discount. I liked the staff, it just is every person has a different answer to how the deal is supposed to work. Maybe just give two of the $25 breakfast discount cards per day, rather than just one for two people and making me negotiate with the restaurant and hotel staff that it is supposed to be breakfast for two included. Otherwise it was great - safe, easy and clean.

Good unique character, kind staff and good location. Parking was easy and hotel staff was always genuine and friendly.

The Heathman Hotel is a nice downtown hotel, well-kept up, with comfy beds and nice bath products. Our Travelzoo deal included breakfast, which was okay (very slow for the food to come out and the order wasn't exactly as we had requested). There were also several late-night characters hanging out on the adjacent block when we came in the night before (not the hotel's fault but it's a general problem in downtown Portland). However, very much liked the Travelzoo deal!
Other Comments
Not sure about the "modern" check-in area. I wasn't sure where to stand when the staff member checked me in on the side and I seemed to be in the way with folks coming in and out of the back room area (where luggage is apparently stored).
