We were in San Francisco for a a Giants baseball game with friends . We arrived early 11 am and the rooms were not ready yet as they were quite busy . “ Afi” the desk clerk was very kind and said she would notify bus when a room became available . But we could store our bags if needed . While we were meeting with friends in the lobby “Afi” approached us and let us know a room was now available . What a kind gesture , those are moments to that make a guest feel welcome . Her smile and demeanor was so sincere . Upon check out there was a small glitch in our bill and again Afi rectified the incident immediately . That is customer service !!!

I love staying at this hotel. It’s a great location-close to Union Square, BART, good restaurants. The rooms are comfortable and the service is excellent. I love the Redwood Room for drinks and the breakfast at Fredrick’s is delicious. I always have a fantastic city getaway when I stay at the Clift. Of the various hotels I’ve stayed in downtown San Francisco, the Clift is my favorite.

Overall, I've enjoyed staying at this hotel on various stays over the last year. The deal through Travelzoo is great with the extra breakfast credits and late check-out. My only complaint during my last stay is that the room I was in on the 5th floor seem to be below what might have been their laundry area. There was a lot of loud noises throughout the night (like the sound of a heavy machine running through a washing cycle) that kept me up so I didn't get much rest.

Our flight home was canceled, leaving us unexpectedly searching for a hotel room at the last minute. I found the Clift Royal Sonesta through Travelzoo and was especially pleased that the hotel offered late checkout, since our rescheduled flight was not until the following evening.
We arrived before the official check-in time and were pleasantly surprised that our room was already available. After a stressful travel disruption, the staff’s flexibility was greatly appreciated. The room itself was absolutely enormous, and overall, we had a very positive experience.
The only downside is the location. The Tenderloin district begins just a block away, and that immediate area can feel somewhat undesirable.

One of the preeminent hotels of San Francisco, with the historic "Redwood Room" is an event in and of itself. Location a block from Union Square and near the cable cars, makes for a centralized tourist must. The iconic Clift Hotel is a San Francisco landmark. I will definitely give it a big thumbs up.

Great hotel and staff. Everyone was so accommodating. No issue at all with the travel zoo promo. The included breakfast was unbelievable! The pastries - OMG! What a great value. Had a lot of noise from the adjoining room 2 of the 4 nights so avoid lock off room if possible. Otherwise great stay - Oh and Steve the concierge was amazing. Every restaurant recommendation/booking was spot on. All diff types of food from seafood to steak to pasta was simply incredible. Johns bar & grill was exceptional.

We had a really lovely time and it was a great package deal. Great location and clean! We got an upgrade to a junior suite which was a lovely surprise for my birthday trip. The Concierge was helpful in finding a good parking spot for an excursion the day we left and all of the staff were very helpful and nice. We did get a drink at the redwood room on site and later in the evening they even had a live band which was a nice surprise as well. The breakfast place has seating but you order at the counter. We made mimosas by getting individual prosecco bottles and the freshly squeezed juice at Fredricks to utilize part of the credit for breakfast but they have a menu posted online as well. (No strong gluten free options which was a bummer for me, but to be expected.) We definitely would consider coming back.

It’s a nice hotel in a good location. Close to Union Square & BART station. Bathroom counter was small. Bed was quite uncomfortable, sloped to center & did not provide support. Biggest issue, however, was the thin walls. They are VERY THIN and you can hear everything going on in the room nextdoor and the elevator shaft.

The room itself was quite large, very modern and stark in decor (which doesn't appeal to me, but I know it is the trend), the bed was very comfortable, the location was a few steps away from the Curran Theater. The Redwood Room cocktail lounge is gorgeous but when we went in after the theater that night, the music was so loud that we couldn't stay and took our drinks to our room.

Hotels at this level usually included a terry robe for use during the stay. I had packed with this in mind for our one night stay, but was disappointed to find that they didn't have this amenity. I wish we had been able to enjoy the ambience of the Redwood Room. It doesn't open until 5 pm, because of dinner and theater plans we weren't able to get in when it might have been quieter.

I liked the spacious room we received with a dining credit of $70 for two per day with a $10 drink credit too. That was a bonus, but overall it was ok, except for the false fire alarm that made us panic and had to quickly gather ourselves to safety. I don’t think I’d stay there again, but for the modest price I guess it’s okay.

The shower was slow and water was coming out of the spout at a very minimal speed that made it really hard to rinse off. Also, there was no valet parking which sucked to the core with a family haven’t to lug our heavy belongings without any persons to help us. Lastly, the employees at the restaurant inside the hotel weren’t quite friendly. Most had bad attitudes that made the dining experience unpleasant. Only a few tried their best to smile and have a positive vibe, but most were grumpy and a look of annoyance to have them asked for anything that made them have to walk to get utensils or a box to go.

Even though we are locals, we have stayed many times in SF and have to say this was one of the best hotels we have stayed at. The staff was wonderful, the ambience was great, and the location was perfect for ease of walking to many restaurants, shops and other sites of interest.

All was exceptional except for the housekeeping services. Upon check in, our attendant taking our luggage to our room, came back down and told the front desk that the room we were supposed to occupy smelled like cigarettes! This is a non-smoking property! They did accommodate us to another room immediately, but was shocked that housekeeping did not raise the issue before saying our room was available! Secondly, during our stay, we noticed a used floss pick on a dining chair!!!! We had to call down and ask them to see what was found. They showed up hours later! Finally, after cleaning of our room after the first night, they did not replace the water bottles for the coffee machine! The coffee reservoir was not portable!!! Again, all other services and staff were impeccable!

Everything was great except the check-in clerk. But the rest of the staff wS wonderful. My only other issue was being located next to the staff/maintenance room. They kept slamming the door. At least it was after 9am.

The room was spacious and new. Just beautiful! Very nice street view.
Had drinks in the bar - so good and excellent service! Also had breakfast which was very good and efficient. Loved everything about this hotel.

Staff is always kind and helpful. Breakfast is great. Lots of good options and it's included for travelzoo members. Room price is fantastic but they always give us a lower floor. I might ask for a higher floor upgrade to see if they will give it to me for a fee next time. We'll be back.

Excellent hotel, beautiful rooms and shower was amazing! We were lucky that the Redwood Room was open, it was the highlight of our stay, Jackie was the best bartender anyone could have, very attentive and friendly. I hope they keep it open daily. On booking, it said the Redwood Room are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Highly recommend this hotel. Just be aware, no parking in the hotel, but plenty of choices nearby.

Spent one night for my birthday. The rooms are very large and nicely decorated. Breakfast in the attached restaurant was very good. We wish the bar/lounge had been open the night we were there as we hear it is amazing. Close to theater and Union Square if that is your destination this hotel would be good. Does not offer parking but a valet lot is very close.

The Travelzoo add-ons (breakfast and a dining credit) added a lot of value. Rooms are clean and modern, staff are friendly and helpful. The only downside we encountered was poor soundproofing between rooms. Ours had a door to an interconnected room, and we could hear everything happening in that room. Not sure if soundproofing is as bad in rooms without that interconnection.

Lovely older hotel.
Great quiet large room with comfortable beds. The only downside of the room is the shower which only has rainfall head and no handheld or fixed shower head. The water preasure was pretty low and thus showering took a bit of time.
Meals in the Redwood Room and in Fredericks were very good but rather pricey. Fortunately the F&B credit ( Hooray for Travelzoo!) Covered it all.
I would definitely return to the Clift Royal Sonesta.

The staff in every area of the hotel was beyond courteous, helpful and professional. The room was better than described, spacious and well-appointed Junior Suite. And the food and food service was exceptional in both restaurants. One of the best hotel stays I’ve ever had.

The photos of the lobby of the hotel are a little misleading. The entry does not come across as quite as spectacular. However, it's not bad either. The bar/restaurant was very nice, although we didn't eat there, we had drinks the bartender was very friendly. We wished it opened before 5:00. All the staff were great. The morning breakfast was not great but good and they have that system down so the line moves fast. The guest services guy Steve was GREAT! He got us a short notice reservation at an AMAZING Italian restaurant just a 5 minute walk away. The rooms were large, and quiet. The beds could use an upgrade but not horrible. We had to Uber whenever we left the hotel. Walking to the ballpark or the wharf is just not realistic even for the best. It's just long boring walks (lots of hills) and wastes time. Uber were easy to get however, reasonable when sharing the ride with our friends and fast. One of the BEST things about this Travel Zoo package was the credits. $72.00 + 50.00 + 10.00--PER DAY! We were able to have a nice cook to order breakfast, and drinks at the bar each day and didn't use all our credits. That with the great price on the room would have me coming back. Parking is right across the street...not overly inconvenient and not that expensive for the city.

Our family of four (including a 6- and 8-year-old) had an amazing stay at the Clift Royal Sonesta this past weekend. The hotel’s central location puts you in the heart of all the sights and is within easy walking distance to trains, bus routes, cable cars, the baseball stadium, and Chinatown, with simple access to Uber/Lyft as well. The highlight was the front doorman, whose warmth and quick attention made the kids smile every day—he even shared little “secrets” about the giant lobby chair! The breakfast was AMAZING: my husband loved the perfectly cooked Eggs Benedict, while the kids devoured the fruit cup and delicious pancakes. Our room was quiet (away from the elevators), spacious, clean, and comfy. If we visit San Francisco again, we’d definitely stay at the Clift Royal Sonesta.

The Clift is a beautiful hotel. Staff were pleasant, rooms very comfortable and relatively quiet despite being on a busy street. Food on site was excellent! The bar area is gorgeous and relaxing!

Most everything went well, but our room was near the elevators and the went late into the night and started very early in the A.M. If we would have been advised of this at check in we would have chosen another room. Also the water pressure in the shower was so low, you had a hard time rising the shampoo out of ones hair. it would take close to a half hour to complete a shower.

When we arrived at the hotel the check in clerk wrote the credits on our room key envelope that stated $72 dollar breakfast credit , $50 beverage credit and a daily $10 credit applied to food or beverage . During our stay the computer system went down and they reverted to manually entering our charges and upon Check out could not verify our bill . They said they would email the receipt . When I got my receipt emailed , the hotel did not apply the credits to my account . When I contested the charges the breakfast credit is not actually $75 nor $72 as they charged and deducted $12 for gratuity and $7 tax so that they breakfast credit is really only $53. One would need a calculator to keep track of your breakfast charges. I did ask the cashier in the breakfast room if I was within my credit limit and both times he acknowledged that indeed we were . Then they did not apply the $50 beverage.credit nor the $10 daily food and beverage credit . Even though upon check in the front desk clerk clearly stated the credits , the hotel blamed Travelzoo for not applying the credit to the hotel . I only received $72 dollar refund . I am not sure if I would go back to their hotel as they placed the blame for their snafu upon Travelzoo. Computer failures happen but I expect a hotel of this caliber to keep better records and give their guests the benefit of the doubt especially when the guest has done nothing to trigger the problem . Did Travelzoo forget to apply the credits ?
