Mendocino is "the premier destination on California's Northern Coast" -- Frommer's

Why We Love It

  • The hotel is right by the ocean and only a half mile from State Route 1
  • It is located in peaceful downtown Mendocino
  • There are three on-site restaurants: two casual and one fine-dining option

Overview

The second you enter the Mendocino Hotel's mahogany-filled lobby -- complete with a crackling fireplace, stained-glass windows and a number of antiques -- you are transported to a different era. The building was constructed in 1878 and dates back to a time when Mendocino was a happening port for the logging trade. The hotel is right by the ocean, a half mile from State Route 1 and a mile from Mendocino Headlands State Park and Mendocino Bay.

While the European rooms (this room type is not offered in our deal) are quite small and have an in-room vanity and sink and shared restrooms across the hall, upgraded Luxury Garden Rooms are much more spacious. These upgraded rooms were renovated back in 2006 and feature views of the lush greenery outside. Many also have pullout sofas, fireplaces and porches. Wi-Fi is complimentary in the guest rooms.

There are three restaurants to choose from on the property, whether you feel like something more casual (Garden Room or Lobby Bar) or a finer dining experience (Mendocino Hotel Restaurant). The hotel is right in town, too, so there are plenty of dining options and shops within walking distance.

From the press:
  • "It's easy to see why artists were -- and still are -- attracted to this idyllic community, a cluster of New England-style captains' homes and stores on headlands overlooking the ocean" -- Frommer's

Almost impossible to reach the hotel operator from our room. Left messages but NEVER received a callback. The food at the restaurant and lounge was served cold. Don't eat at the hotel, eat elsewhere.

Soacious room with fireplace and adjoining porch overlooking garden. Presto Log provided for fireplace. Large bed.
Other Comments
Complimentary wine was supposed to be a $39 value; the same wine at the local market was $8.49, and it regularly sells at the larger supermarkets in my area for $5.99. Definitely false advertising. Also, a toddler was running back and forth upstairs for hours, and the sound came right into our room below. Hotel staff remedied the problem quickly after a call to the front desk; however, the young couple with the toddler decided to leave noisily at 4:30 a.m., so the peace and quiet was interrupted again. Our room also had a lot of poorly functioning doors, but we got used to their quirks fast enough.

My only disappointment was that the hotel stopped serving dinner earlier than we anticipated. We were there in the off season so restaurants not staffed for later service.

The garden cottages are better and more private than the main house.

the furniture especially, the upholstery, the bedlinens, the rugs, are all torn and worn and ripped and threadbare. Seriously in need of some renewal.

The bed in my room was not very comfortable, but everything else about the stay was wonderful. Very gracious staff and fabulous massage therapists.
