Jamaica: How you can help in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa

This week, our hearts and minds turned to Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 storm—one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in over 150 years. Jamaicans have lost lives, homes and infrastructure as a result of the hurricane. Tens of thousands remain crowded in shelters as government workers and emergency relief teams continue to clear roads to isolated communities, assess damage and bring in vital supplies of food and water. The southwestern coastal community of Black River sustained the most extensive destruction; most homes were affected to some degree, and many were completely destroyed. Cuba and Haiti also suffered loss of life and devastating damage as a result of the storm.
These communities need support to rebuild and rebound. Jamaica's government has launched a site listing the nation's primary needs—you can pledge donations for items like batteries, buckets and medical supplies—as well as a platform for monetary donations that will aid families in need. Other reputable organizations that are actively working to aid those affected by Melissa include American Friends of Jamaica; the American Red Cross; GlobalGiving; International Medical Corps; and Project HOPE.
