The book, which won the Guardian Fiction Award back in 1982 and was voted one of the best-loved novels of all time in a 2003 BBC poll, remains a firm favourite with all ages. It was also turned into a BAFTA-winning TV film starring John Thaw. This adaptation is playing at London's Phoenix Theatre for a strictly limited time, featuring Olivier Award winner Oliver Ford Davies as the eponymous recluse. Direction is by Angus Jackson, whose credits include productions at the Old Vic and Sheffield Crucible, among others.
