Situated on the banks of the Llangollen waterway, the Lion Quays Hotel & Spa is praised by The AA Hotel Guide 2014 for its "magnificent" grounds and countryside views. The 4-star hotel also has its own award-winning spa and two restaurants, with canal views.
The hotel is in the ancient market town of Oswestry, just 30 minutes from Shrewsbury, described by Lonely Planet as Shropshire's "most picturesque town". It's a 10-minute drive to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, can be reached within an hour. The historic town of Chester, home to the zoo, the cathedral and the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet centre is a 30-minute drive north.
The spa has been awarded four out of five bubbles by The Good Spa Guide, which praised its "well-kept facilities and unusual international-themed treatments", and was named Decleor's National Residential Spa of the Year in 2012. Facilities include a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a steam room and a gym. The spa also has a Thermal Suite (a £25 per person supplement applies) with a hydrotherapy pool, experience showers, a relaxation room and the UK's first-ever snow cave (an indoor snow experience to stimulate circulation and aid muscle regeneration).
When you're ready for dinner, the Waterside Restaurant serves seasonal classics under reclaimed timber beams or on its terrace. Expect dishes such as pulled pork terrine, beef and ale pie and Eton mess. Also on site is Nico's brasserie, described by the Shropshire Star as a "pearl of an eatery".
All bedrooms are individually furnished and come with under-floor bathroom heating, power showers, LCD TVs equipped with Freeview and complimentary Wi-Fi. Upgraded rooms have canal views and a terrace or balcony.
