For excellent value in a trendy area of Berlin, look no further than the Upstalsboom Hotel Friedrichshain. This unpretentious property offers guests clean, simple rooms and breakfast served until noon at the weekends, plus a seafood restaurant, a cocktail lounge and a rooftop terrace with city views. Lonely Planet describes it as "a breath of fresh air".
Formerly part of East Berlin, Friedrichshain is a trendy, rapidly gentrifying part of the city. It's home to design and media companies, plus plenty of style-conscious bars and cafés. The huge Mercedes-Benz Arena entertainment complex is 10 minutes on foot from the hotel. The East Side Gallery, a part of the Berlin Wall turned outdoor art space, is one of the most interesting neighbourhood sights. Metro and overground stops, with connections all over Berlin, are five minutes' walk away.
There's a small spa with a sauna and infrared cabin, and a rooftop terrace with bar service that's a great place to sunbathe or hang out. North German specialties and international cuisine are served in the Friesendeel restaurant at lunchtime (Monday-Friday), and there is also the informal Friedrichshain restaurant, which serves dinner daily. Afterwards, sip on a cocktail at the Comenius Lounge -- it's open until late, and there are tables outside in the summer for people watching.
The bedrooms, in four sizes, are clean and simply decorated in neutral colours. All have free Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities, and there are sitting areas and mini kitchens in the largest. Smoking and pet-friendly rooms are available on request. Take note: rooms are not air conditioned and can get rather warm during summer heatwaves.
