The Wordsworth Hotel & Spa, built in 1870, is in the centre of Grasmere, which Lonely Planet calls "one of the prettiest of the Lakeland hamlets". One of the village's main draws is its links to poet William Wordsworth -- he lived in Dove Cottage between 1799 and 1808. You can take a guided tour of the house and gardens, and visit the Wordsworth Museum, which displays his original letters, journals and poems.
The hotel is next to the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop -- the former cottage of Victorian cook Sarah Nelson, who created the recipe that is still used today.
There are 35 bedrooms, including Mountain and Garden View rooms that come with Grasmere gingerbread and the Four Poster room, which has a Jacuzzi bath tub. All rooms have free Wi-Fi.
Guests can use the W Organic Spa, which has an indoor pool, a Jacuzzi and a sauna. Spa treatments use Voya products, which contain seaweed from the west coast of Ireland (charges apply).
Food is served in either the Signature Restaurant or the Dove Bistro. There's an extensive wine list and an emphasis on local beers. Afternoon tea is available daily from 12-5pm in the conservatory or lounge or on the terrace (weather permitting).
The Lake District has countless things to do. You can cycle in Grizedale Forest, go on a steam yacht gondola on Lake Coniston, visit Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, nosy round Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin, or explore the 3105 kilometres of rights of way this national park has to offer.
