The beaches are stunning but rocky, and a strong undertow means you’ll need to stick to the hotel's huge on-site saltwater pools, which are open 24 hours. Relax on the beach for long enough and you might even spot a humpback whale -- this coast is on a migration route (January-March).
Each suite has its own ocean-facing private terrace and personal concierge (who can organise anything from local tours and art classes, to surf hire), plus there’s complimentary bottled water in the mini bar and free Wi-Fi. Some also have outdoor hammocks and open-air infinity hot tubs. The villas range in size from 1-bedroom pads to 4-bedroom palaces and are aimed at families in particular (children under 16 are prohibited from staying in the main resort), with full kitchens and lush green courtyards.
"One of the best spas in the region" (Fodor’s), the Spa at Esperanza has a selection of botanical treatments, with its Mexican Beer and Lime Facial among the most unusual. Yogis of all levels will appreciate complimentary yoga classes (they are popular, so book early), and yoga mats and DVDs are provided in every suite.
There’s a good choice of restaurants and bars on site, and a full schedule of culinary events, including Thursday-night fiestas accompanied by fireworks. With its swim-up bar and stunning views, La Palapa is perfect for al fresco dining, and working your way through the lively El Bar’s extensive tequila menu guarantees a fun night. Cocina del Mar serves up fresh fish and seafood that blends North, Central and South American influences, and Las Estrellas is a family-friendly Italian option.
