"Teetering at the edge of the North Sea, this is romance on a baronial scale, with four-posters, single malts and bonfires on the beach", says The Sunday Times of Ackergill Tower, naming it one of the Ultimate 100 British Hotels in 2013.

Lying half an hour's drive from John O’Groats (commonly regarded as mainland Great Britain's most northern point), the castle feels very remote and has in the past been a favourite bolthole of celebrities including Jeremy Irons and Billy Connolly.

The original property dates back to the late 1400s and according to The Scotsman, is one of the most haunted hotels in Scotland -- keep your eyes peeled for the ghostly woman in a green dress.

Today, there are lots of activities on offer amid the hotel’s 3000 acres of grounds, including croquet, archery and clay pigeon shooting (extra charges). The hotel even has its own loch.

You can also head down to the beach for a blustery walk and go kayaking in the bay. The nearest town, Wick, is only 10 minutes by car and is home to the Old Pulteney distillery.

After a healthy dose of fresh air, guests can retire to the Drawing Room for afternoon tea. Later on, the restaurant serves seasonal food, such as wild trout with lentils in the spring and Lairg Roe Deer with crushed celeriac in the winter. More casual options, including beer battered Scrabster Haddock, are available at the on-site Smuggler's Inn. A spa is planned for 2015.

Rooms are bright, airy and spacious, with large windows. They are all located in the main building and antique furniture adds a touch of class to the classic country house décor. Most have views of the grounds, but the best overlook the cliffs and sea beyond.
