  5. £1389 -- Vietnam: 13-Nt Triple-Centre Adventure, Was £2185

Elegant Travel

Vietnam made an appearance on National Geographic Traveller's Hot List this year and was named a Destination to Watch by Condé Nast Traveller. With the hype set to continue in 2013, we recommend a trip before prices rise -- and at £1389 per person, this 13-night triple-centre escape does the trick.

The package, which regularly costs £2185, includes:

  • Return flights from London Gatwick, plus internal flights and checked luggage
  • Two nights at the 4-star Sunway Hotel Hanoi, with breakfast
  • 1-night full-board Halong Bay cruise worth £150 per person
  • Seven nights at the 4-star Centara Sandy Beach Non Nuoc Resort in Da Nang, with an upgrade to a private Bungalow Garden room and breakfast
  • Three nights at the Oscar Saigon Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, with an upgrade to a Deluxe Room and breakfast

Start in Hanoi, Vietnam's exotic capital -- which marked its 1000th anniversary last year -- with a stay at the Sunway Hotel, 10 minutes from the Old Quarter. From there, sail around stunning Halong Bay, with its 3000 limestone islands, deserted sandy beaches and floating villages, on a luxury junk boat. The bay featured in the James Bond film "Tomorrow Never Dies".

Next, spend a week at the beachfront Centara Sandy Beach Non Nuoc Resort in Da Nang. Surrounded by green mountains and tropical gardens, the hotel offers a free shuttle service to Hoi An, the go-to place for tailored clothes. There are four UNESCO World Heritage Sites close to Da Nang.

In Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), where the trip finishes, we suggest a visit to the Củ Chi tunnels to see how the Viet Cong lived during the Vietnam War. The Oscar Saigon is a 5-minute drive from the sprawling Bến Thành Market, where you'll find everything from spices and handicrafts to Vietnamese coffee and street food stalls.

Depart on Tuesdays and Fridays from January-June; September-November, 2013.

Transfers are not included and are an extra £90 per person in total.
