Overview

The Derbyshire Hotel is 35 minutes' drive from the Peak District National Park and the Derbyshire Dales, and is also within an hour's drive of Ashbourne, Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock.

Newstead Abbey, formerly an Augustinian priory and the ancestral home of Lord Byron, is 25 minutes' drive away. Creswell Crags, a limestone gorge with caves to explore, is a 30-minute drive away.

Chatsworth House -- the stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire that sits in 1800 acres of grounds and ornamental gardens -- is a 35-minute drive from the hotel, and Sherwood Forest (the legendary home of Robin Hood), Bolsover Castle and Hardwick Hall are within 35 minutes' drive.

The hotel has a restaurant and a bar with an extensive wine list.

Guests get use of the hotel's health-club facilities, which include a indoor heated swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room and a gym. Wi-Fi is free.

The hotel is currently being refurbished. Work is scheduled to end in May, 2019, but the lobby and restaurant will be complete by 1 November.

It is not a hotel being refubished, but changing to a Holiday Inn. One room was not ready and one we were moved to had blocked drain problem and smelt. Third room was ok!The food was mediocre for the price and menu the same in bar and dining room area. There was little to distinguish between these two areas. Vegetarian choice was poor and on the two consecutive nights we were there there was an error with the same vegetarian salad that had been ordered. We felt that although the issues were resolved eventually, the management were not supporting the quite young and inexperienced staff when problems arose.

The food was great, Apart from the staff member who refused to help with the key card, the staff were great. It is a shame because we have stayed there several times and it a useful stop over area for us.

On arrival we were asked if we wanted to pay extra for a refurbished room, it was late, we had driven many hours that day and even more the previous day and it had been a difficult emotional day. As a diabetic I needed to eat and sleep so just said we were fine with what was ready for us. What we were not told that the heating could not be adjusted and the air conditioning was not working! Consequently we slept really badly as it was incredibly hot and we couldn't open the windows! The lack of sleep did not make for an easy journey home the following day. This is sad because we have had good stays here in the past and, had we been told about the problem we would have happily paid £10 for the upgrade. The following morning after breakfast we had to return to reception 3 times to get a key card to work and we were as far as is possible from reception. A member of staff checking rooms said she couldn't help because of safety issues. While I understand this, we were desperate at this point to get out into some fresh air ! We had called earlier in the day, which took several attempts to get an answer ,to inform them of our late arrival and to check that we could still get a meal, so the problem with the room.could have been mentioned then.

The Hotel is undergoing major refurbishment, which we had no idea about until we arrived. The main reception was a building site and no clues where to go to check in, a work man eventually pointed us to an unmarked side door. To get to the restaurant you had to exit the building, not much fun in the recent weather, no signs to direct you, not much atmosphere, and the menu seemed quite limited. We have visited this hotel many times before and always enjoyed it, the food has been outstanding but this visit was very disappointing and we would think twice about returning.

The hotel was undergoing refurbishment so not all rooms open,also the reception was in a small annexe and you had to walk outside and round the front to reach the dining room on our ist night which was In garden room and very cold. On the 2nd night the new dining room was open but again very cold. Hopefully when all refurbishments are done the hotel will be much better. The staff however were extremely friendly and helpful.

It is being revamped and re-named to a Holiday Inn. The new restaurant is more like a motorway service restaurant. There was no ambiance and it was very noisy due to the modern decor. I knew renovating was going on so I’m not complaining about that, but hammering in the room above at 7am was not acceptable!

Hi the hotel is having an upgrade which I new about BUT I did not expect to have to go out side to get to the restaurant or probably the room so far away room 290 with the oldest TV that Remot did not control was going to complain on way out but other people complaing so did no want to loose time as we going to Xmas market

They are refurbishing the hotel at moment so a bit hard to say we enjoyed the stay, staff are very welcoming and extremely helpful, rooms are good but little things like no shelf in shower to put shampoo and soap and beds if used a single are only 2 foot 6 inches wide and sprung edge so not much room to turn over.

We were unaware of the refurbishment taking place. Therefore there was no bar or lounge area for sitting for a relaxed drink, be it tea or wine. The temporary dining room totally lacked any atmosphere and was very cold.
