The Deal

Boost your barbecue skills and sharpen your grill knowledge just in time for tailgate season with this exclusive deal from Big Jim's BBQ in San Rafael. For $85, Travelzoo subscribers can take part in a hands-on, five-hour cooking class and dine on everything they cook, regularly $185.

Big Jim -- born Jim Modesitt -- will take you through the basics of cooking on charcoal and gas grills and teach you how to use a meat smoker. Prep your cuts while learning how to make and utilize dry rub, marmalades, mop sauces, brines and Jim's homemade BBQ sauce.

Students should be ready for a mountain of food as dishes include baby back ribs, pulled pork, brisket, chicken, tri-tip, rib eyes, vegetables, smoked salmon and special holiday recipes. Feast on your creations after the class -- which Big Jim says will be more than you eat than on Thanksgiving -- and leave with plenty of extras to take home.

Classes are held on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Barbecues Galore; see website for more detail and additional dates.
