Why Fly to San Jose?

Considered the capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose is a hub for the high-tech industry and the largest city in the Bay Area. The city is situated at the southern end of San Francisco Bay and is composed of four valleys, the most populous of which is Santa Clara Valley. Like much of California's Bay Area, San Jose has a comfortable Subtropical Mediterranean climate, and with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, visitors don't have to worry about inclement weather. The city is separated into several, large geographic regions, each with its own distinct attributes. Downtown San Jose is a popular destination for business travelers. It's the economic hub of the city and is home to many technology firms. It also boasts many popular tourist attractions, including the San Jose Museum of Art, the Tech Museum of Innovation and the San Jose Repertory Theatre. There are also a handful of historic landmarks located downtown, such as the beautiful Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph. Outside of downtown, travelers can enjoy the refreshing West Coast air at the Alum Rock Park, located in just east of the city. Or browse the quaint shops and farmer's market located in Willow Glen. For a taste of the Far East, visit Japantown. Located a mile from downtown, this multi-cultural neighborhood is a great place to sample international cuisine. Family vacationers can spend a day at the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, while sports fans can see a Sharks hockey game at the HP Pavilion. You can search for luxury boutique hotels in San Jose or discount accommodations throughout the Silicon Valley area. And with Travelzoo's SuperSearch, you can easily find cheap flights to San Jose.

Quick Travel Guide to San Jose

Begin your trip to San Jose by exploring the city's vibrant downtown district. Here, you will find an assortment of landmarks, museum, restaurants and shops. It's also home to one of the city's most active nightlife districts, SoFA, which stands for South First Area.

Art aficionados can visit the San Jose Museum of Art. The institution's large permanent collection predominantly showcases works by modern and contemporary West Coast artists. In addition, San Jose has a large performing arts scene that includes the Opera San Jose, the Symphony Silicon Valley and the Ballet San Jose. The city also plays host to several arts-oriented festivals each year, including the popular Cinequest Film Festival.

Business travelers are often drawn to San Jose because of its ties to the technology industry. But you don't have to be a gadget geek to enjoy the exhibits at the Tech Museum of Innovation. The three-story institution houses an IMAX Theater that shows both mainstream and educational movies. The family-friendly attraction features many interactive displays as well as an on-site cafe and gift shop. Another kid-oriented attraction is the city's Children's Discovery Museum. Considered one of the top children's museums in the country, the facility boasts a broad range of interactive exhibits.

One of the more bizarre attractions is the famed Winchester Mystery House. Legend has it that the heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune constructed the labyrinth-like house to ward off evil spirits. She believed as long as construction continued she'd avoid being cursed. What resulted was an expansive mansion with stares that go nowhere, doorways that open to nothing and other odd architectural touches.

If you're looking to shop, head to Santana Row, one of the most popular shopping districts in the city. The district is home to a number of luxury retailers, including Burberry, Gucci and Diesel. There are also more than two-dozen restaurants to choose from. Or venture to Westfield Valley Fair, one of the largest shopping malls in Northern California. The upscale complex features nearly 250 stores, a food court and nine restaurants.

At night, head to downtown San Jose to enjoy the city's nightlife scene. Here, you'll find a large selection of swank lounges, clubs and bars. Many cater to a younger crowd with live DJ music and crowded dance floors. For a more relaxing evening, visit a chill lounge for a glass of wine and some live jazz.
