Why Fly to Raleigh?

Raleigh and the nearby cities of Durham and Chapel Hill comprise one of the most significant academic regions in the U.S. In fact, this area is commonly referred to as the Research Triangle because of the presence of the research universities of North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Located on the cusp of the North American Piedmont region, Raleigh's natural terrain features beautiful rolling hills and an abundance of oak trees. The city's downtown is home to a number of historic, turn-of-the-century buildings as well as a bustling business district. You'll also find a number of Raleigh's best museums here, including the North Carolina Museum of History and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Shoppers should take a trip to City Market, a cluster of boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Afterward you can stroll through Moore Square, a four-acre park located in the city's center. Quick Travel Guide to Raleigh

Many of the best attractions in Raleigh are centered in the city's historic downtown district. Here, among the majestic architecture of the Raleigh skyline, you'll find Cameron Village. With more than 100 restaurants and stores, Cameron Village is an excellent destination for shopping and dining. Walk down Fayetteville Street, Raleigh's commercial heart. This major thoroughfare connects the State Capitol and the Raleigh Convention Center, making it an important destination for business travelers. If you're visiting during the winter holidays, you can catch the Holidays Parade or the city's New Year Eve's celebration, both of which take place along this historic street every year.

Next, head to the North Carolina Museum of Art. This expansive space houses 40 galleries that showcase both modern and ancient artworks. Adjacent to the museum is the Museum Park. Here, you can walk two miles of trails and view the various site-specific works that inhabit the outdoor space. If you're traveling with children, visit the Marbles Kid's Museum. Located in the Moore Square Historic District, this interactive children's museum features an IMAX theater and a handful of permanent exhibits targeted toward children under 10.

If you're visiting in the summer, cool off at Pullen Aquatic Center. Located in the 72-acre Pullen Park, the Aquatic Center features an Olympic-size swimming pool and a water therapy pool. Nearby, you can take spin on the park's carousel. This early-20th century, hand-carved amusement ride is officially designated as a historic landmark.

For libations, visit Raleigh's City Market in the Moore Square Historic District. The outdoor market is home to a variety of bars, lounges and restaurants.
