Why Fly to Ontario?

When you can’t decide between sightseeing in an exciting world-class city or exploring some of the most impressive wonders of the natural world, it’s time to search for cheap flights to Ontario, Canada’s most populous province. From the heart-pounding glass-floored elevator rides up Toronto’s lofty CN Tower to the deafening roar of the churning Niagara Falls, Ontario is full of unforgettable experiences. But in this friendly and beautiful region, even everyday diversions like grabbing a beer at an old Ottawa tavern or breathing the crisp air on the shores of Lake Huron can be memorable.

Which Airlines Fly to Ontario?

Ontario’s busiest air gateways are Toronto Pearson International (YTO) and Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International (YOW), located about 280 miles apart in the southeast corner of the province. Pearson is Canada’s most active airfield and is well-connected to all regions of the U.S. by Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental, Delta, United, US Airways and Virgin America. Cities with the most frequent flights to Toronto include Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Newark and New York.

Flying nonstop into Ottawa is more difficult, as the majority of U.S. flights into Canada arrive in Toronto. Notable exceptions are Chicago, connected by American Eagle and United Express, and Washington D.C., with flights via Air Canada Jazz and United Express. Via their affiliate airlines, all major U.S. carriers offer connecting flights to Ottawa.

Ontario Flight Tips

If you plan to start your trip in the melting pot city of Windsor, about 220 miles southwest of Toronto, search for flights into Detroit Metro Airport. Windsor lies just across the Detroit River, and the trip usually takes less than an hour by car. Detroit Metro is well connected to all regions of the U.S. by every major national carrier. Particularly good deals are often available with Delta, which uses Detroit as its second-largest hub.

Thunder Bay International Airport (YQT) is the northernmost major airport in the province, and is the ideal air gateway into Northern Ontario. There are no direct flights from the U.S. into Thunder Bay, so you’ll need to first fly into Toronto-Pearson and then continue on to Thunder Bay via Air Canada Jazz or WestJet.

Quick Travel Guide to Ontario

Ontario is Canada’s second-largest province by landmass, and with sights worth seeing in even its most far-flung corners, it can take quite a while to fully appreciate all that it has to offer. If you have only a week or less to enjoy in Ontario, you may want to begin your travels in Toronto and the immediate area surrounding Lake Ontario, a region known as the Golden Horseshoe.

Toronto is absolutely packed with stunning museums, shopping districts, restaurants and landmarks, and you’ll find some of the finest hotels in Ontario in its lively neighborhoods. Huge attractions like the Ontario Science Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum are among the most intriguing in the province. Just across the lake from Toronto is Niagara Falls, easily the most astounding natural feature in Ontario.

A few hours’ drive to the east is Ottawa, Canada’s capital. You’ll want to make time to savor Parliament Hill, the collection of imposing Gothic buildings where observers can catch the ritualistic changing of the guard.

Well over 90% of Ontario’s population resides in the Great Lakes region, yet more than 90% of its landmass lies to the north. If you’re more in the mood to get out in the wilderness, you may want to enter the province through the Northern Ontario city of Thunder Bay and continue north to explore the forests, falls, canyons and caves that stretch on for hundreds of miles.
