Quick Travel Guide to Nantucket
Begin your trip to Nantucket Island by getting acquainted with the area's beautiful landscape. Located just northeast of the city of Nantucket is the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. This natural area features 16 miles of trails and sand roads for hiking and over-sand vehicles. The area is also a popular fishing and bird watching destination and is home to the Great Point Lighthouse, which was originally built in 1784. Another scenic natural area is Squam Swamp, a large swamp located on the northeast part of the island just south of the wildlife refuge. The swamp features an abundance of native plants and animals as well as a 1.7-mile long walking trail. Or rent a kayak and row through Hummock Pond on the south side of the island.
Golf enthusiasts will want to hit one of the handfuls of championship courses located throughout the island. The Sankaty Head Golf Club on the eastern portion of the island features a picturesque, award-winning course. From the ninth hole, players can view the iconic Sankaty Head Lighthouse. It is one of the only courses to provide links-style golf outside of the U.K. Other Nantucket golf facilities include the Siasconset Gulf Club, the Miacomet Golf Club and the Nantucket Golf Club.
Swimmers and beach bums will want to visit the island's north side beaches, which sport calmer, warmer waters than the beaches on the south side. Located just north of downtown Nantucket, Jetties Beach is reachable by bike, car and shuttle bus. The beach features lifeguards, showers, a playground and volleyball nets. Kayak, windsurfing and sailboat rentals are available as well. Or head to Brant Point located east of the city of Nantucket. With its strong current and lack of lifeguards, it is not the best beach for swimming. However, it is one of the most scenic beaches on the island and is home to the Brant Point Light.
For shopping, visit downtown Nantucket's Main Street. This strip features many upscale apparel and jewelry boutiques as well as a good selection of antique and gift shops. In the evening, enjoy the refreshing Atlantic air while strolling down the pedestrian-friendly streets, dine at one of the many seafood eateries or grab a cocktail at a cozy pub.
