All international flights into Frankfurt land at Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA), Germany’s most active airfield and one of the busiest in the world. It serves more international destinations than any airport worldwide, and a substantial number of flights from the U.S. connect here en route to other German cities.

FRA is the main hub for Lufthansa, Germany’s dominant airline, which flies nonstop from Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark, Orlando, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C.

American, Continental, Delta, United and US Airways also fly direct to Frankfurt, but their only routes not covered by Lufthansa are Delta’s service from Detroit and US Airways’ flights from Philadelphia and Charlotte. If you don’t mind enduring a layover for a chance to save, broaden your airfare search to include other large European carriers like British Airways or Aer Lingus.

Tourists who are careful to avoid the busiest conference days can take advantage of competitive weekend rates at the fantastic hotel deals in Frankfurt, several of which are worth the trip by themselves.

You can easily dedicate a few days to exploring the city’s central historic district on the beautiful Main River. Altstadt, Frankfurt’s Old Town on the north bank, boasts sites including the imposing Gothic cathedral Dom St. Bartholomaus and Goethe Haus, the boyhood home of Germany’s famous author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. On the south bank, appropriately nicknamed the “Museum Bank,” numerous museums exhibit German history, art, film and literature. Highlights include the Stadel Museum, home to Monets and Renoirs, and Liebighaus, which houses sculptures from around the world.
