Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG), located five miles southwest of Downtown Flagstaff, receives mostly private flights and small, single-engine aircraft. The notable exception is US Airways Express, which flies in regularly from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the primary hub for US Airways and a major focus city for Southwest Airlines. Sky Harbor is one of the best-connected airports in the region, with direct flights from over 50 cities throughout the United States.

Flagstaff is an extremely popular destination among travelers eager to immerse themselves in the Southwest’s great outdoors, as incredible nature sites surround the city in every direction. The most famous among them, Grand Canyon National Park, is an easy 80-mile drive to the north; if you only have time for one side trip beyond the city limits, you simply can’t beat the views from the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. But if you’ll be in the area for a few days, make time to visit the Barringer Meteor Crater, an impressive impact crater spanning nearly three quarters of a mile in diameter, and the Walnut Canyon National Monument, where you can get an up-close look at several ancient cave dwellings.

During the winter, the city’s major draw is exhilarating alpine skiing at the Arizona Snowbowl, a state-of-the-art ski resort nestled in the San Francisco Peaks. When the weather is warmer, those same peaks make an excellent setting for hiking, rock climbing and wildlife spotting excursions.

While you can spend your entire visit in Flagstaff’s outdoorsy surroundings, there’s plenty to see and do in the city itself. Its Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was first discovered, is recognized as one of the nation’s best. The Museum of Northern Arizona features dozens of intriguing displays that reveal the region’s rich culture and geology. And all throughout the area, the numerous gift shops, restaurants and hotels in Flagstaff graciously cater to the thousands of travelers who pass through each year.
