Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii. In Hawaiian, the word Honolulu means "sheltered bay". Located in the tropics, the climate of this island paradise is moderated by its mid-ocean location. That means rainfall is heavily concentrated in the winter months. Temperatures are usually between 15-30 degrees Celsius throughout the year, and hardly go higher or lower than those numbers.
Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is the main gateway for flights into the state of Hawaii. The main terminal of the airport is served by most major American airlines from the mainland U.S. The Inter-Island Terminal is the home base of Hawaiian Airlines. Local flights to other Hawaii islands are served from here. If you need to get to a different terminal, keep an eye open for the free Wikiwiki Shuttle that runs every few minutes.
When on your way to your hotel, if you're not renting a car, you should take the Airport Waikiki Express, which provides shuttle service to hotels in Waikiki every half-hour (for a fee). City buses also come to the airport every half-hour.
Waikiki is world-famous tourist district of Honolulu. Millions of visitors come to tan and play on Waikiki Beach. If the beach isn't your thing, you can always make your way over to Kalakaua and Kuhia Avenues for shopping, and nightlife. There's also the Ala Moana Centre, the world's largest open-air shopping centre.
Other attractions include the Bishop Museum, the world's largest collection of Hawaiiana and Pacific Culture articfacts, the Honolulu Zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium and the Foster Botanical Garden. If you're into more live events, check out some Hawaiian music at the Waikiki Shell, or live theatre at the Diamond Head Theatre. Luaus and hula shows are also widely available around the island. TheBoat is a cost-effective way of seeing the shoreline of Honolulu and surrounding areas. Whatever your choice of entertainment, most attractions on Oahu can be seen in a day trip or spread out over several days.
