Slaley Hall, part of the QHotels group, has two 18-hole championship golf courses -- The Priestman course and The Hunting course, which is "widely recognised as the top track in the north east" (Today's Golfer). There is also an on-site driving range and various dining and drinking options, including Hadrian's Brasserie (where you'll have dinner on the first night of your stay) and The Whiskey Snug, which features cosy wingback chairs, a coal fire and wood panelling.
Facilities include a health club with an indoor pool, a sauna, a whirlpool, a steam room, a gym and a spa with nine treatment rooms (supplements apply for treatments). Quad biking, archery, paintballing and Segway tours can be arranged on request (extra charges apply).
The hotel is on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is 30 minutes' drive from Northumberland National Park, but there are also mapped walks of the hotel grounds and plenty of countryside trails from the hotel's doorstep. The village of Blanchland is less than 15 minutes' drive from the hotel -- be sure to see the old village abbey and the medieval vaulted bar at the Lord Crewe Arms tavern.
Alternatively, soak up some history at Hadrian's Wall, step back in time at Beamish Museum or take a leisurely stroll along Tynemouth Longsands beach. You can also explore Newcastle upon Tyne, with its "dramatic backdrop of Victorian elegance and industrial grit" (Lonely Planet). These are all around 50 minutes' drive from the hotel.
