Hotel details
Set on the high street in the middle of Great Dunmow, the Saracens Head Hotel has recently been acquired by the Coaching Inn Group, the AA Hotel Group of the Year for 2024.

The property has a restaurant serving a range of hearty classics and lighter fare, and a bar where you can indulge in a cocktail, sample one of the many gins on offer, or choose from a selection of wines from around the world.

Mountfichet Castle, a reconstructed Norman fortress, is less than 20 minutes' drive away, while opulent Audley End, one of the finest Jacobean houses in England, is 15 minutes' drive. A choice of walks and cycling routes is on offer in Great Notley Country Park, around 10 minutes away by car.

Great Dunmow is famous as one of the few remaining towns that hold a 4-yearly flitch trial. By tradition, any married couple who can persuade a jury of six maidens and six bachelors that for a year and a day they have never wished themselves unwed is entitled to a side of bacon.

The winning couple are also paraded through the streets in the town's flitch chair, which you can see in the Maltings Museum in town. This tradition—and Dunmow itself—is even mentioned in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
