Why We Love It

  • This Victorian former manor house is in the North Yorkshire countryside
  • There is a huge choice of walking routes nearby -- the North York Moors National Park, which has one of Britain's largest expanses of heather moorland, is 25 minutes' drive, and the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which contains the Castle Howard Estate, is a 30-minute drive away
  • The walled city of York, with its soaring Gothic Minster and museums including the York Castle Museum and JORVIK Viking Centre, is less than 25 minutes' drive away -- York Bird of Prey Centre is five minutes' walk from the hotel
Parking is free. York railway station is 25 minutes away by car.
Rooms are in modern wings that adjoin, and have indoor access to, the original manor house.

Overall thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Only slight downside was the crowded dining room as a consequence of 2 coach parties also there. But the staff seemed to cope and the food was good .

Welcoming staff. Dinner food quality very good with over generous servings. Breakfast offering okay but could have been hotter even when using a hot plate. They have an afternoon tea or cream tea option which are both well priced. Standard room was adequate and well serviced with clean quality towels daily. Provided shower gel, shampoo and hand soap. The shower curtain did need changing and apart from a little dust behind bathroom door it was fine.
Other Comments
The hotel has lovely grounds and a patio to sit out on. There is an interior bar area with televisions. Using the Park and Ride facility from Rawcliffe Bar proved inexpensive and gave easy access to York. Also a short drive to Designer Outlet Next door to Birds of Prey centre which looked interesting.

“Executive” room, at a £10 per night upgrade, was very basic. Clean, but small , dark and gloomy, very old fashioned, and generally depressing.
