Warm and friendly welcome when we booked and (later) when we arrived. Excellent food throughout our stay - and an excellent wine list! Surprised to discover that the Hotel only had a Food Hygiene Rating of 3 - we found the food to be of a high quality and well cooked. Our room was comfortable but dated and had several patches of mould in the bedroom and the en-suite. Plenty of hot water and a comfortable bed!

We appreciate that there’s been a change of ownership but that was in 2023 and the rooms are very tired & grimy. Luckily our friends were upgraded but we weren't although we paid the same. Meals were acceptable but we had the same mix of steamed veg every night for 4 nights, on 2 nights they were hardly cooked. We couldn't fault the staff but the rooms leave a lot to be desired.
Other Comments
Our friends had stayed at Wynnstay twice before & had told us about the excellent food & lovely staff - but also they’d warned us about the condition of the rooms. If it wasn’t for the warning, we probably would have asked for our money back. Our friends were disappointed this time.

We enjoyed our stay at The Wynnstay in Machynlleth.
All the staff were friendly and personable. Breakfasts and dinners are cooked to order and the food was delicious, all procured from within a 20 mile radius of the hotel. The en-suite bedroom was very clean and the bed was comfortable; hairdryer, kettle and various drinks were provided. Free parking at the rear of the hotel is an added bonus.
There has been a recent change of ownership and refurbishment is underway -the dining room looks great!
There are numerous attractions and places of interest in the vicinity and the hotel is ideally situated for coastal or mountain visits.

Lovely hotel in the heart of the town. Very helpful and friendly staff. Quaint atmosphere and good menu. Bedroom was a bit retro but everything clean and fresh. Best of all very dog friendly. One can find a place to sit and eat meals with your pooches away from main restaurant without problems. Definitely happy to stay again in the future.

Absolutely brilliant. Lovely rooms. Great staff. Jas on reception. Ella on the bar and wines. Both with exceptional customer focus made our 2 night stay outstanding. The food is all locally sourced. Cooked and presented with love and care.

This is a hidden gem. Farrow & Ball colours throughout. The hotel changed hands in late February and the current owner is definately driving this place in the right direction. Jas, front of house & Ella, bar and wines are exceptional. Perfect customer focused service. Nothing is too much trouble for these two guys who make the Wynnstay the hidden gem it is at the moment, but with these 2 guys representing this business, it won't be a hidden gem for long.

The food was very disappointing, not the Masterchef cuisine from Gareth Jones that we were expecting. I could have overlooked the tired state of the hotel if the food had been good but the whole stay was very disappointing.

Rather shabby appearance and room quality. Staff quite erratic but one excellent exception at breakfast. Room not serviced during stay, disappointing facilities, including no toilet roll at the beginning!
However, wonderful meal in the evening, which made our stay worthwhile. Beautifully prepared, top quality local food, though many items (especially at breakfast) were too salty for our taste. The Welsh lamb was superb!
Other Comments
The hotel was quirky and interesting, but was in need of a little TLC e.g. a lick of paint, more attention to detail, particularly in pleasant customer service, not overcharging on final bill etc. Not much to do in the local area, especially for families, but an interesting MOMA (museum of modern art) for a brief visit.

The rooms were were definitely in need of an update and a good clean. Everything was very shabby and tired. The bathroom had a smell of damp, the tiles and grouting over the bath were mouldy. The window had mould around it and didn’t close properly.
The room carpet needed cleaning.
It’s the first time I have ever stayed in a hotel and not had the room made up or the bins emptied or the bathroom cleaned.

We were staying in a larger room as on booking we were told there were no standard rooms available. For the size of the hotel there did not seem many guests so we were a little surprised that there were no standard rooms available and we had to pay a £40 supplement. The only added benefit with this room was it was larger in size. The small TV did not work, heated towel rail did not work and the room and bathroom needed a deep clean and renovation.
Other Comments
The breakfasts and evening meals we had were excellent. The chef had produced a menu for all tastes and it was local produced cooked to a very high standard.
If the new owners carry out a total renovation of this hotel it will be a lovely place to stay where guests can easily access the surrounding area.

Staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was great. It was worth going just for the food. The location was excellent for touring the area. The hotel is over 200 years old and has lots of character. Restaurant and bar are very cosy but the building needs some TLC. Everything worked in our room but it was in need of redecoration.

pluses - excellent chef in evening, so dinners punched way above the weight of the hotel. Staff really friendly. Generally clean
minuses - it is a very old building which inevitably needs a lot of maintenance, particularly the bathroom. Everything was functioning in the bathroom, but it was tired and where, for instance, a light fitting had been replaced, they had polyfillered the holes of the previous fitting, but left smears of polyfilla and not painted over where the old fitting had been. some wood was deteriorating due to bathroom conditions (damp). no hairdryer (not even when we asked to borrow one). breakfast disappointing after the excellence of evening meal. mattress too soft.

Firstly on arrival left standing at what appeared to be reception, eventually a young gentleman appeared from another area after spotting us and checked us in.The room was tatty in need of complete renovation . Ceilings in bedroom and en-suite disgusting mould all over ceiling in bathroom caused by poor ventilation. Decor as in soft furnishings old and needed replacing. We looked for information on Wi-Fi and meal times etc but there were none. The staff all doing their best just not enough of them. The hotel I feel may be living on its past reputation! It’s raves about its exceptional chef I fear is unfounded at best the food was passable certainly not out standing.

We stayed at the Wynnstay for 4 nights on a special cut price deal which included room, dinner and breakfast each day. We paid a £20 per night supplement for a larger room. The hotel is under new management and changes were being made even as we arrived. Tables and chairs were being moved from the front to the rear of the hotel as the location of the dining room was being changed. We enjoyed our stay and really hope the new owners will make a success of running the hotel, but here is our candid assessment of the hotel. The whole building needs a good clean and facelift. The carpet in our room had to be seen to be believed, very worn and dangerously ill fitting. The bed was very comfortable, and we enjoyed having a sofa and writing desk in our room. The bathroom was on three distinct levels and using it (I am 81, my wife 79) was like an assault course. (The toilet was on the middle level and it would have been very easy to fall when leaving it). It might be an idea to tell guests of the hazards when they book! The log fire in the downstairs lounge was brilliant and the food was excellent, our congratulations to the chef. However, the waiting staff were young and very keen to please, but lacked adequate training. Breakfasts were very good and could not be improved upon. Drink prices were very reasonable. Car parking was free and at the rear of the hotel. To sum up, we were treated very well by all of the staff who were very keen to please and make our stay enjoyable. Unfortunately, the cleaning of our room was not up to standard, some days it wasn't cleaned at all and the bins were not emptied. On one occasion we had to complain to the manager about our overflowing bins and he personally went and emptied them straight away.
This is a new project for the owners and hopefully the negative features will be dealt with before too long.

We really, really hope the new owners will persevere and make this a truly exceptional hotel.

Hotel room was very tired & quite depressing with the dark red walls in our room. Bathroom had cracked floor tiles & bath panel had seen better days years ago. Generally it felt as if the hotel needs some money spending on it.
Menu was very limited on both nights & food was only ok & not something we would go back for.
It was decent value but just didn’t do it for us.
If you want somewhere cheap & cheerful you won’t be disappointed but we expected better from Travelzoo

The single room I stayed in could do with updating, the toilet flush was not very efficient, the shower head was of little use and the tv was not working due to lack of signal. However,. The room and bathroom is spacious, again there is a problem with the tiled bathroom floor which can be very slippery when wet. having said the aforesaid, the hotel is nice and a stay is good value.

We loved the hotel. It was old and quirky in a good way. The staff were lovely. The food and wine were excellent. The bar served real ale which we like. The area is lovely with an RSPB wildlife centre and an Osprey centre nearby. The only thing that that would improve the room for me would be a shower that you could lower.
