Gorgeous historic inn - full of charm and Elizabethan atmosphere. It was right in the centre of picturesque Rye. We thoroughly enjoyed it although the room we were given (no. 22) was not part of the original inn and was located above the kitchen. It was very hot in there, the bed mattress was very poor quality and uncomfortable. As a result, we didn't sleep well
Other Comments
The restaurant at The Mermaid was excellent both for dinner and breakfast. Like the rest of the hotel, it is very historic with a cosy feel.

A MAGICAL overnight stay for us both at The Mermaid Inn, Mermaid Street, Rye. (Combined birthday and WA celebration). Rebuilt in the 15th century, it is a treasure trove of history on an ancient cobbled street in an enchanting old town. It was once a hub for smuggling gangs, notably the notorious Hawkhurst Gang who were feared throughout the southeast and at one point numbered 600+. Violence, romance, intrigue, secret doorways and passages, creaking timbers (oh BOY do these creak!) cavernous fireplaces and links with shipwrecks, war, fleeing refugees and royalty... it has it all. And the food. Don't start me on the homemade pistachio ice cream. I think it's enchanted because now it's all I can think about.
Other Comments
Unfortunately the soundproofing between bedrooms is pretty nonexistent because of antiquity... likewise the constant noisy creaking of timbers which does interrupt sleep. This is unavoidable. But it's good to be aware.
