More Reasons to Go
- A grand Georgian house in the East Sussex countryside, The PowderMills is the former residence of an 18th-century gunpowder maker. Now a 4-star hotel, it's set in 85 acres of lush parkland and has a 7-acre fishing lake.
- The hotel's Orangery Restaurant has two AA Rosettes. Its modern European cuisine is made with "high quality produce" and is "executed with accuracy and attention to detail" (The AA).
- The town of Battle is five minutes' drive away or around 25 minutes' walk away—there's a country trail leading to Battle Abbey and the 1066 battlefield directly from the property. The abbey is open daily throughout October, and at weekends throughout November and December.
- Head to Hastings to explore the old town, treat yourself to fish and chips, or stroll along the seafront. The seaside town is around 15 minutes away by car or train.
- National Trust-owned Bodiam Castle—set on an island in a large moat and one of the most picturesque castle ruins in the UK—is less than 20 minutes' drive away.

It's in an amazing location

Unfortunately the people in the room upstairs argued most of the night and their kids kept running across the room. So we had very little sleep due to the arguing. The restaurant does not merit 2 AA Rosettes. The whole experience was quite a let down

Lovely location, reception staff very officious, dining room/breakfast staff very good, shower not brilliant, but overall (and this stopped us eating there in the evening) we had the most expensive and most mundane club sandwiches ever, £16 each and utterly scandalous.
Other Comments
It could be great, just not there yet. Training needed, the mediocre sandwiches came too late and without cutlery or napkins. There is no way it's walking distance to Battle, you could walk but it's not safe on the roads and a considerable distance.

The staff at the hotel were all extremely polite, and very helpful. The room was lovely. The food was delicious at both breakfast and the evening meal, served in the beautiful Orangery where the ambiance was calm and serene. A lovely place to eat. The hotel also has an outside swimming pool with deckchairs. There were lots of lovely places to sit and unwind, both inside the hotel and in the grounds.

The location of the Powder Mills Hotel is in restful Sussex countryside with a large lake in a very attractive setting. Our ground floor room was comfortable a well provided and the restaurant food was excellent. The only negative was that noise from adjoining room was audible. Overall it was an excellent break (three days).
