More Reasons to Go
- This famous former smuggler's inn dates back to 1420; it was reputedly visited by Elizabeth I and has hosted the Queen Mother.
- Our members love this property, praising the "beautiful" building, "excellent" staff, and "delicious" breakfasts.
- There's a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant that serves "memorable dishes", according to The AA, as well as a bar and several lounges.
- Camber Sands, a 3-mile-long sandy beach, is a 10-minute drive away. It's one of the UK's best spots for beachcombing (Daily Express) and is a popular location for kitesurfing, too.
- Camber Castle, a 16th-century fort built by Henry VIII, and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, where you might spot tern and oystercatchers, are both five minutes' drive away.
- Ypres Tower, which was built in the 13th century and has impressive views of the River Rother, is less than five minutes' walk from the hotel. It's one of the sites of the Rye Castle Museum—the other is a former bottle factory on East Street—and houses exhibits telling the town's story.

We arrived to a very warm welcome especially as we have an electric car and the space near a pod was ready waiting and allotted to us. This was so reassuring. Pat was extremely helpful and took us up to our room and explained the general workings of the facilities. We were celebrating an 81st birthday and were impressed with both the efficiency of the staff and the excellent quality of the food.
Other Comments
Our only difficulty was that we were allocated room 33 which was a trek to get too and we were unaware that some rooms were a distance away. Perhaps on booking we could have been informed of this. But this in no way spoiled our enjoyment. The room was perfect and very comfortable and we have no hesitation in wanting to come for a return visit.

From the moment we arrived all the staff were friendly, polite, efficient and helpful. It was a very hot w/e so really appreciated the fan in the room. So much history to the hotel. Food portions were very generous and the breakfast delicious. Great value stay.

It is a beautiful and historic building, the restaurant itself is a pleasure to sit in. The staff are very attentive.
Other Comments
There are a handful of demerits. The breakfast was slightly disappointing. The full English was dry and not very substantial, and the kitchen failed to get the poached egg request correct. The scrambled egg portion was rather small. Minor detail perhaps, but a pepper grinder had to be requested at each meal including dinner. As regards the bedroom, we found the bed mattress somewhat springy and not well damped.

Fabulous olde world inn full of character but very well appointed with excellent staff. Breakfast was one of the very best, quality ingredients and excellent choice with no extra supplements. A delightful stay.

The Mermaid is situated right in the centre of this beautiful old town, round the corner is Lamb House, home of Henry James, and the magnificent parish church. Plenty to see in easy walking distance.

Excellent from start to finish. Easy booking. Amazing welcome, staff were great at breakfast. Simple checkout. Only comment was the size of the bathroom. But we managed and all facilities in there were great. All in all, a wonderful place to stay.
