More Reasons to Go

  • This rural property dates back to 1669 when it was built as a hunting lodge for King Charles II
  • Verderers, the hotel's fine-dining restaurant, was originally Verderers Court and it was here that judicial officers passed judgement on any misdemeanours in the royal forest. Many original features of this room, such as the gallery, still exist and sit in the same position as they did more than 300 years ago
  • For a more casual dining experience, the Orangery serves up some traditional pub favourites, light snacks, and afternoon tea
  • The Speech House Hotel sits next to the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Symonds Yat Rock is a popular vantage point, with views of the River Wye and both sides of the valley. It is less than 15 minutes' drive from the hotel
  • The ruins of Tintern Abbey, the subject of Wordsworth's famous poem, is around 25 minutes' drive away. Gloucester is a 30-minute drive, and the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is around 45 minutes away
Parking is available.

We had a room on the top floor,a good bit of exercise, up the stairs, but at least it was nice and quiet. The room was warm and the towel rail worked. So many hotels don't turn them on.

Really good that there were many walks direct from the hotel. All the staff were nice and polite and helpful

As always, our aim was achieved! We had a lovely relaxing time. Ideal travelling distance, just about an hour and a half drive to get to Speech House. These breaks/short trips get us away from housework for 3 days and give us ample time for exploring in the locale. The hotel is, as always, spotlessly clean (BIG thank you to the cleaners) and run by well trained staff. This is more than may be said for the previous 2 places we've stayed at. The hotel staff are so well trained and helpful we never needed to speak to a manager at all. IF there were 10 stars for staff, you'd have all of them! Well done Speech House, we'll be back!

I really didn't enjoy having breakfast in the ''annexed dining room''. Not the hotel's problem or fault; all down to Covid and the resulting table/seating restrictions. I would like a facility to be able to book a table for breakfast.

We spent two nights in this lovely old building. The room/bathroom was very clean with tea/coffee and toiletries provided. Had great sleeps in the big comfortable bed! Our room was facing the road which is quite busy which was not of any real concern to us but might be to others.

We ate in the orangery on one evening as you can take a dog in there (as we had visitors) It was very enjoyable.

Check in went smoothly - had tried to do online but didn't have enough reception in the Forest. Room was cosy, bed comfy, bath hot though shower pressure not great. Ordered room service which arrived quickly and was very tasty. Bar, conservatory and public rooms looked very festive, would be keen to come back in non-pandemic times for a meal (or maybe we'll try out their huts).

Due to COVID lots of new measures in place - to use the hotel loo needed to collect a key. Lack out side seating once again due to COVID, Booked the Den experience for Dinner on Friday night felt £10 a hour a little on the pricy side as the staff in the garden anyway serving, Certain areas a bit dated. room very nice but again bit dated, the four poster bed was just four posts no drapes ? i am sure due to COVID this was the case otherwise - waste of time,
