The main house dates from the 18th century. Its eye-catching façade was built in the Georgian Gothic Revival style. Its interiors feature original hand-painted wallpaper, intricate tapestries, and antique furniture.
Walking trails wind through gardens and woodland. Enjoy a peaceful stroll beside the River Lambourn, which runs through the hotel's grounds.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy at the hotel. Its 18–hole golf course was designed by professional golfer and renowned course architect Dave Thomas. Try your hand at fly fishing on the river, or clay pigeon shooting. Or simply relax and indulge in a beauty treatment at the Avalon Retreat (supplements apply).
The National Trust's Basildon Park is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Highclere Castle, from the TV series "Downton Abbey", is 15 minutes' drive away. The historic house is open for guided tours and special events during the winter season. See its website for further details.

Food and staff were excellent but hotel was very quiet therefore lacked atmosphere! We’d like to try again in the summer months! as the location is beautiful!

When you enter the gates and motor up the very long drive you realise that you're not going to stay at the local version of a national hotel chain, where all the hotels look the same. As you drive through the golf course, take notice of instructions from any golfers so that your car doesn't get hit as they tee off.
We were in one of the Summer Houses, a few minutes' walk from the main building. If the weather is wet, take a brolly into the room for the short walk to the hotel for meals. There are only two rooms in each Summer House, one for each party and which are spacious and en suite with all you need. Each has its own designated parking spot.
The grounds are spectacular with a lake, stream and lots of wildlife
As part of the Travelzoo deal we had dinner on the first night in the restaurant, although you can also eat in the bar. The food was hot and well-presented but both the restaurant and bar were rather chilly.

The deal we had was great value for money and the hotel is convenient for visiting other towns and attractions in the area. Definitely recommend a visit.

I was impressed by my experience, I thought it might be tired and run down but whilst some areas are starting to show signs of age it was really lovely, clean and comfortable. The food throughout our stay was brilliant, from breakfast to evening dinner.

We thoroughly enjoyed the two days we had there. We had a room in the summer house which was large. The staff are absolutely lovely, so helpful, and polite.
The rooms were clean and the towels changed each day. Breakfasts were really good, as was the choice of food available. The grounds are great for a good evening walk after the golfers have finished

Hotel and staff very good, the grounds lovely, the room although keeping with the ambience of the Gothic hotel the funiture covers were very worn and gruby, the room was hugh and the bathroom too, but both could do with a fresh lick of paint, food very good, in all good value for the money,

It's an old Manor house so the decor is a bit tired, but the room & bathroom were spacious & clean. If you want ultra modern look elsewhere, but to relax in the afterglow of a past period in time this is the place.

An amazing building in the Gothic style. We stayed in an executive double room in the main building. When we walked it, it had that real wow factor. The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful. The only slight downside was the restaurant menu, which is rather ordinary and uninspiring: burgers, pizzas, chilli, fish and chips etc. However, the food was well cooked and enjoyable.

We had a lovely very large bedroom typical of an old manor house. We were told when booking that if we wanted that room is was on the second floor with lots of steps up to it (47), however to have such a nice room it was worth it.

Had a lovely couple of days at Donnington Grove. Very relaxed atmosphere, with friendly, attentive staff. The room was charming, clean and very spacious and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with a good range of both continental and ‘full English’ items (buffet style for most items, but additional items such as kippers were cooked to order, along with various types of egg if you wanted something other than fried). We also had an evening meal at the hotel which was delicious. Good food cooked well. Menu was ‘bistro pub’ type food - just what we wanted and nothing too pretentious!

Look and layout of menu lets hotel down as could be smarter than just laminated page , makes it look a bit like a budget chain , also more variety of meals and maybe changed daily. But otherwise food is outstanding and very reasonably priced.

First impressions the place is falling apart, but look beyond the rotting wooden frames, peeling paintwork and you'll find a wonderfully warm comforting stay among some very nice people. It could do with some money being invested in an overhaul but the staff ad atmosphere, overcome those issues. Has got to be the most comfortable nights sleep I have had in a hotel for years plus some beautiful grounds to look out on.

If you're looking for a comfy, quiet stay in a countryside setting, this is one for you, just don't look too closely at the condition of the woodwork and accept the odd screw missing here and there and you'll love it .... we did

Good value TZOO deal and nice summer house room
However was initially given to view 2 identical menus(@18:00 but different prices £25 and £30 pp for 3 course meal - apologies and told £25 was correct
At 19:30 identical menus on table but now £32 pp
No one could explain why then or at checkout - being investigated…..

It was our first time here. We stayed in the summer house rooms. Lovely large room with 2 large chairs to sit in and watch the golfers outside.
There are lots of grounds to explore minding the golfers. Reception and dining room staff very pleasant, although the restaurant was shared with the golfers and friends. But on the whole a refreshing break.
Other Comments
The only downside was the restaurant and the menu. It was trying to cater for golfers and friends also for couples who book in with Travelzoo and similar companies. In my opinion this does not work. When we book these breaks we expect to have either an alacarte choice or a set dinner option. The club house menu did neither in my opinion. I did raise this issue with the reception manager and she would pass on my opinions to her manager.
Travelzoo yourselves should advise people that the menu and restaurant will be shared with golfers and friends not just hotel clients.
Thanks Steve

Stayed in the same room as last time which we think is the best!! The Summer house rooms 1 and 6 have great views of the river and golf course practice area. However have the downside of getting wet for meals if raining.
Other Comments
Evening meal was a bit uninspiring and a little of the expensive side for the food we received. Service was also slow.
Breakfast was overall good, but they didn't seem to be able to keep up with the supply of the hot food all at the same time. You'd wait for something to be cooked (quite a long wait too) and then when that arrived something else had run out so it was difficult to actually have everything we wanted. This happened both days.

We were welcomed by friendly staff on arrival. We felt that more information about the hotel and surrounding area would have been helpful. It’s very golf focused so if you’re not golfers we felt uncomfortable enjoying the grounds as we didn’t want to get in the way of the golfers, so ended up just walking the short distance to the castle and back.
The room was very spacious but in desperate need of refurbishment. There was peeling wallpaper, paintwork was yellow and peeling, bathroom vinyl flooring had seen better days and “beige” toilet paper!! It didn’t give a good impression.
We had dinner on our first night in the Beau restaurant. We were disappointed - two out of the five main dishes were not available. The piece of salmon was so small I felt I had shared the portion with another diner. The potato stack was very garlicky and not pleasant. The prawn cocktail was tasteless - tiny prawns on some shredded iceberg lettuce with paprika sprinkled on top. The lamb dish my husband had was good.
Breakfast was ok - cooked breakfast was good but the eggs on “toast” were served on warmed white tasteless bread unbuttered - ground pepper on the table would have been much better than the powdered pepper. Muffins were the highlight.
