Why We Love It

  • The Strawberry Hill Gothic-style manor is nestled in 500 acres of parkland, within sight of 14th-century Donnington Castle (where entry is free), and five minutes drive from the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Dating from the 18th century, the main house still features its original hand-painted wallpaper, intricate tapestries and antique furniture
  • Donnington Grove has had several famous residents: it was the childhood home of Regency-era dandy Beau Brummell, and was later home to socialite and heiress Daisy Fellowes, a style icon known for her vast jewellery collection
  • The River Lambourne runs through the hotel's grounds, and fishing can be arranged for an extra charge
  • Its 18-hole, par-72 golf course was designed by Dave Thomas, who also worked on the Ryder Cup course at The Belfry
  • Newbury, a historic market town famous for its racecourse, is 10 minutes' drive away
  • You can take a stroll along the Kennet and Avon canal, an 87-mile-long waterway that extends from Bristol to Reading and passes through Speen (10 minutes' drive from the hotel)
  • Highclere Castle, as seen on TV series "Downton Abbey", is 15 minutes' drive away, and the National Trust's Basildon Park is 30 minutes' drive
*Classic King Standard and Classic King Lake View rooms are in the Lake View building, which is adjacent to the main house; Executive King Summer House rooms are immediately next to the main house, while Executive Main House rooms are located in the manor house itself.

Parking is free. Newbury railway station is 10 minutes' drive away.

Staff excellent especially Edward in restaurant. All very professional and attentive. The food was a little slow after ordering. Luckily the weather was good for our stay but would not have wanted to walk to dining and bar area during bad weather as you have to go outside and down a slope with no hand rail.

Lovely spacious room, great location. Unfortunately the food wasn't as great as the first time we stayed but the hotel was very busy this time although this should be no excuse. The staff were, in the main, first class.

We where housed in the Sunmer House which was very nice and modern. However the windows where in serious need of attention. It was open at the top and you could not movevit from inside. You could from outside but looked like it might fall apart ! Our friends next door was he same except open at the bottom. Also the putting green right outside being manicued each morning at 7am was not good. I appreciate golfers are out early but really.??

Although the hotel needs some refurbishment, it is a beautiful hotel. We couldn't get used to how amazingly spacious our room was. High ceilings and old features made it very unique. The staff were wonderful and very helpful and nothing was any trouble for them. Always a smile on their faces. The deal we had included dinner and breakfast- both wonderful. Newbury town is a lovely town with a beautiful lazy canal where you can while away your time and Oxford is only A40 minute drive away. Well worth a visit

We had a most enjoyable stay. Lake view room was comfortable and well appointed. Unfortunately lacked privacy as guests in neighbouring rooms needed to walk by ours. Maybe some net curtains or blinds would help, as we needed to keep our curtains closed for privacy. Food was good and restaurant staff extremely helpful.

Location of room would have been very difficult if it had rained.
