Combe House Hotel is in a wooded valley in the Quantock Hills. The area has red deer, wild ponies, and even an extinct volcano.
The property dates from the 1600s and is a Grade II-listed former watermill. The original 26-foot waterwheel is still in place.
The hotel's restaurant and bar have a "homely vibe" (The Daily Telegraph). They use produce from local suppliers, including Somerset cider and artisan cheese.
William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge both lived in the area in the 1790s. Many of the poems in their collection Lyrical Ballads were inspired by the surrounding countryside. Coleridge Cottage—the poet's home between 1797-1799—is less than 10 minutes' drive away.
The Woodland Hill circular walk passes right by the hotel. It passes through open heathland with views of the Somerset Levels, Mendip Hills, Bristol Channel, and Bannau Brycheiniog.
Dunster Castle, Exmoor National Park, and the West Somerset Railway are all within 30 minutes' drive away.

The room size was great. The breakfasts were good and plentiful. The cream tea was divine. But above the material benefits was the exceptional friendliness of the staff.

A bit awkward to get there - when approaching from Bridgwater on the A39 it is probably best to continue to the next road into Combe House rather than take the narrow lane that starts at a lay by and climbs over the Quantocks and then down again.

From a bit of a problem on arrival with a misunderstandng about our room (which was quickly dealt with by the Owner Gareth) to leaving after our 3 day stay we had excellent value for money. All the Staff were pleasent and the food was spot on. We tend to be traditional in our culinary tastes e.g. Char grilled Chicken and Steak tending to be our favoured options. We also tend for health reasons not to have starters or sweets but those we saw on other guests plates looked very nice!!
The location of the hotel is very unique and the approach "road" a bit of a challenge but that simply added to the charm of the Hotel. The interior decor was just excellent and a lot of care has gone into interior decoration and fittings. W loved the break and totally relaxed which was the object of the exercise. A big thank you to all the Staff - and Gareth!

Lovely hotel , full of character. Meals were excellent, but there could have been a little more variety for a three-night stay. Staff were friendly and helpful. Views are better from rooms in the front of the hotel. A very good base for exploring the Quantock Hills. We would be happy to return sometime in the future. Thank you to all at Coombe House Hotel.

The hotel, set within a small Somerset village, oozes peace and tranquility. The twin room chosen was very comfortable, the hotel staff were welcoming and helpful, the meals experienced were truly outstanding. Our brief two night stay to celebrate a birthday proved to be everything and more that we sought. Thank you to everyone at the hotel for making our first visit so enjoyable.

Lovely area for meeting after dinner if coffee machine installed would have encouraged people to stay downstairs and socialise instead of going to their rooms. Rooms very dated. Menu extremely restricted and expensive so difficult if staying for more than 1 night.

Fantastic location. Lovely view from our bedroom. Great walks directly from the hotel grounds. Building has lots of character and public rooms tastefully decorated. Easy car parking.
Other Comments
Room 8 - No bathroom window, no shaver socket, no hand held shower option (only 'rainfall') no curtains (only shutters that did not shut out light). Kettle too tall to fit under tap. No coffee machine and not enough tea/coffee for 2 adults for 2 nights. Poor soundproofing (but we do acknowledge that its an old building)
Staff - lack of warmth. At breakfast we were told 'I only have one pair of hands!' when we politely asked for a cereal bowl, yoghurt and a croissant (all of which had run out). At breakfast on the first morning our request for coffee was taken and then forgotten until we needed to remind them.

We had pre dinner drinks, coffees and teas added to our bill which we hadn't had. These were removed from our bill but I am not sure we were believed. Perhaps getting a signature might be better. Left a bit of a nasty taste.

Breakfast plentiful and there was a good choice on the dinner menu. Food was delicious.
Hotel is perfectly positioned for walks straight from the front door into the countryside.
