Why We Love It

  • Surrounded by 4000 acres of forest, this impressive castle has featured in the "Robin Hood" film and "Doctor Who" TV show
  • There's a spa with three treatment rooms, a sauna, a rainforest shower, hot tubs, and relaxation rooms, or if you're looking for more high-octane activities, try air-rifle shooting, archery, and Land Rover off-roading experiences, which can be arranged for an additional charge
  • You can dine in the informal 2010 Brasserie — located in the former scullery of the castle — or sample classic French and modern British fare in the fine-dining 1851 Restaurant. Afternoon tea is also available in the characterful lounges
  • "Character is what Peckforton is all about," says The Daily Telegraph. Tapestries and antiques abound, suits of armour are dotted around, bedrooms have high ceilings and arched windows, and some come with working fireplaces
  • See all our Christmas gift deals

Travelzoo Tip: We have also negotiated a 2-course Sunday lunch with prosecco at the castle's 2010 Brasserie for less than £15 per person, saving 50% on the usual cost.

The staff here were excellent; I was the one who made the blunders! First I bought two vouchers not realising they were for two people anyway, so I booked a four-night stay. Secondly, I turned up a day early! None of this phased the staff who were courteous at all times. Any review here must inevitably be coloured by the current C situation. Some of it perhaps benefited us eg. the 10pm curfew meant that the hotel was very quiet at night (even though were were given room 107 mentioned in an earlier review!). I think if we had only stayed two nights we might have been disappointed but with four we settled into a rhythm and felt more at home. As others have mentioned the menu was limited, and more or less the same in the Brasserie as the 1851 restaurant. Is it always like this, or is this another C factor? And I do detest menus where 'sides' are extra. Having the Land Rover experience on site was a definite plus and we used this for Himself's birthday present, much appreciated. The downside of C was that there was no cleaning of rooms. Now we usually, don't mind this as it is more private, and I should stress that we could have asked for anything we needed (and did request and were given a different duvet) but after four nights in a room that would have been better assigned to a single, we did feel rather as if we were living in a squat with our accumulation of dirty mugs, and empty (water) bottles. Another downside, or maybe it's always like this, is that in spite of the magnificent building there was something lacking in the atmosphere of the place, no fires, no cosy lounges for reading. Perhaps to discourage socialising and the spreading of germs. There are no leaflets about the history of the castle, or about things to do in the area. And don't imagine going for walks in the garden or woods because there are none unless you walk the length of the drive. But there are plenty of things to do in the area if you have time and are prepared to explore, which you might not on a simple two night stay. Would I go again? Maybe

Just brilliant. Ought to include cereal with the full English breakfast, though.

If given Tarporley room, beware the noises at night - heating or plumbing, rumbling/vibrating sound which the staff were only partially successful in getting to grips with. Otherwise, brilliant!

sadly muted due to covid. lovely room but odd faults let it down.....socket for kettle behind TV was unusable as tv cupboard partially blocked socket, pipes up to bath leaked & major problem was miniscule shower for tall people with fixed rainforest head so cannot shower without getting hair wet. Dinner was good but meat portions extremely small, carrot was larger than piece of pork! Overall an interesting experience, would be better if comments above were addressed.

Wonderful! The Castle is beautiful, and the staff went out of their way to ensure that we had a great stay. We had a free room upgrade as it was our 30th wedding anniversary. The Brasserie evening meal and breakfast was lovely. Next time we hope to book for 2 or 3 nights it was that good!
