"Charlie, the waiter/receptionist was very welcoming especially as we arrived late. He supplied me with a vegetarian option even though I hadn’t requested it on booking and supplied me with extra blankets on request. He made our visit so easy and pleasurable. Thank you Charlie. We liked the fact that we could walk straight out of the hotel and start our walk around lake Derwentwater to Keswick."

Why We Love It

  • The restaurant offers "smart, contemporary cooking" (The Daily Telegraph) that showcases local produce including Herdwick lamb and hogget, and cheese from the Kendal Cheese Company
  • Bedrooms are split between the original house and the rear extension, and have "magnificent mountain views" (The Michelin Guide 2020)
  • The views continue from the conservatory, where you can borrow binoculars to spy on the wildlife or sketch books to create your own image of the "stunning views" (The Daily Telegraph) from the three acres of gardens and beyond
  • The hotel is a 20-minute walk from the southern shore of Derwentwater. Catbells Fell is less than 10 minutes' drive away, and the market town of Keswick is less than 15 minutes' drive away

I had phoned to check COVID security and I fact we felt the hotel had prepared very well indeed. We loved the fact it was warm and had real fires in the sitting room and dining room. A lovely extra touch was the sketch pad and artist pencils if we had wanted to draw.

We were allocated room 11 which is quite small and looks out to the car park but I'm sure that they have much nicer rooms, certainly with a much better view. We assumed that it was because we were on a Travelzoo deal that we got the small room with the poor view. Our deal included 1 dinner. The dinner was like a taster menu. 5 courses but no choice. Never before have we dined at a hotel where the only choice was take it or leave it. Have said that all 5 courses were very tasty, well presented and top quality. The breakfasts were not to the same quality, but there was a good choice. We were asked of we would like to done on the second night but opted to dine out as we thought the cost represented put value for money especially as the 5 courses were fixed and without choice.
