ITS OK

It was ok overall. I was however disappointed as I asked (in advance) for a gluten free option for a cream tea and was told I couldn’t have it. Not good enough really. The hotel is tired and has been fixed in places with cheap products. Eg., the toilet seat was the cheapest model you could possibly buy; the taps in the bathroom really didn’t turn off properly; the shower was the cheapest nastiest fitting and the base of the bath was incredibly flimsy when you stood in it… I’m not very heavy, I dread to think what might happen to a larger person. The bed was reasonably comfy though and it was clean. I do feel it is marketed as being something it isn’t. Faded grandeur at its best.

Good value for money. The restaurant food was good at OK decent prices (apart from the artichoke which had gone off). It is 10 miles out of York, so is handy for a cheap place to stay outside the city.

The hotel is clearly a repurposed care home. From the Travelzoo blurb I had the impression it was a country house/hall. There is an older building but the accommodation block looked like flats for the elderly. The duvet smelled of urine, as did the bathroom. There was an interconnecting door to the adjoining room, with no sound proofing, so we could hear what was being said by the guests in the next room, and we also felt like we had no privacy from them. The bed springs were so squeaky that the noise woke us in the night when either of us turned over. We let the waitress know that the artichoke in the antipasti starter was off, as it was fizzy. It would have been good to have some acknowledgement of this, or even a message from the chef. It would have been helpful to know we should have taken the road to Huby rather than the road to Easingwold.

Have visited several times and find it suits us very well. It’s located outside York, so is in a rural location but very close to the city and near other towns worth visiting, like Thirsk and Ripon. Staff are invariably helpful and pleasant, food is good and the rooms are always, in our experience, clean and comfortable. It isn’t the plushest hotel in which we’ve stayed but is more than acceptable.
