More Reasons to Go

  • Set into a cleft on North Devon's coastline, Clovelly is a historic landmark that continues to preserve its fishing village heritage. A scenic path winds down from the visitor's centre at the top of the 400-foot cliff, between whitewashed cottages to the quay with views of the Atlantic along the way.
  • The New Inn was built in the 17th century and is situated halfway down Clovelly's cobbled hill. It has just 11 rooms, some of which have balconies.
  • Breakfast is served in The Hamlyn Room, which later in the day serves freshly caught fish and chips. The inn also has a bar that serves locally brewed beer and cider.
  • The village has a "quaint, yesteryear feel" (BBC Travel) and served as a shooting location for "Sense and Sensibility" and "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", besides inspiring artists and writers through the ages.
  • The walled kitchen gardens at Clovelly Court are less than 20 minutes' walk from the hotel. Its restored Victorian greenhouse grows produce for local businesses.
  • For leisurely rambles, stroll eastward along the wooded path of Hobby Drive, with viewpoints overlooking the sea and harbour below, or go west on the South West Coast Path.

The room was comfortable though needed a bit of tlc. The staff were generally helpful.

The food, although enjoyable was overpriced. The cooked breakfast was good but apart from cereal there was no other choice - no yoghurt, almost no fruit, no pastries. The most disappointing was the cream tea that was included in the deal. It was served in a takeaway container with tea in paper cups and resembled dishwater. The scones had obviously just been taken out of the fridge and were cold and hard as was the cream.

Great location, but the room was absolutely tiny, it should only be a single room, not enough room to fit two people in it, one of us had to sit on the bed for the other to walk around! It was also rather grubby, and should have been much cleaner. Breakfast was lovely, but spider webs and dead flies surrounded me!

A quaint old Inn on a very steep cobbled street. Good food (large portions) and staff friendly.

Would benefit from a spruce up outside - i.e sweep the veranda and tidy up the furniture plus a few flowering plant pots & baskets!
