Why We Love It

  • Built around 1900 and sympathetically restored in the latter part of the century, Nunsmere Hall Hotel once hosted parties and social events for the well to do of Edwardian England
  • The scenic property is "green and leafy, with well-cared-for gardens and a lake that curves round on three sides" (The Daily Telegraph)
  • Margaret Thatcher retreated to Nunsmere Hall Hotel to write her memoirs in the 1990s
  • The historic city of Chester is less than 30 minutes' drive away. Here you can indulge in a spot of sightseeing or shopping, or visit Chester Zoo, a zoological garden with over 20,000 animals and 500 different species
  • Delamere Forest, complete with walking and cycling trails, and a Go Ape Tree Top Adventure park, is around 10 minutes' drive from the hotel
  • Peckforton Castle, a Grade I Medieval castle set in 4000 acres of forest, is around 20 minutes' drive away
  • There are plenty of activities at the hotel, including air-rifle shooting, archery, laser clay pigeon shooting, and Segways (subject to availability; fees apply). For nature lovers, there's a nature trail walk, hawk walks, and falconry
  • The restaurant serves classical French and modern British cuisine. You can also enjoy a drink at the Captain's Bar, named after the original owner of Nunsmere Hall, Sir Aubrey Brocklebank, who was chairman of a shipping line
  • The hotel has increased hygiene regulations, such as reduced numbers of staff on site, temperature checks on arrival, hand sanitiser dispensers around the venue, and social distancing measures in place, particularly in the restaurant layout, to protect against the spread of Covid-19
Parking is free. Chester railway station is around 20 minutes' drive away.

Would be nice with better atmosphere and if you could access a drink at any time in the bar
Other Comments
Lack of atmosphere Government guidelines advising you need to order food to obtain a drink in the bar even though you have dinner booked in the hotel Too long waiting to go into the restaurant when staff were regularly passing an unmanned station Noise level in bedroom from adjoining bedrooms

Not the staff's fault but they were unclear on the current pandemic rules. The meals were generally on the small side & our bedroom had a couple of minor faults that you wouldn't expect but generally fine overall.
Other Comments
Breakfast gave the impression of penny pinching with toast on mail plate & tea/coffee not left for refills.

Bed comfy. Free parking. Outside courtyard nice.
Other Comments
No location details given on booking email sent. Cream tea included. Scones salty and tiny. Room was ok but paintwork shabby. Very warm . Notices to keep windows shut or flies and mosquitoes enter (due to lake in grounds). Breakfast was mediocre and very small. Had to constantly ask for forgotten items. Quite a while to wait for table, appreciating virus working challenges. Grounds pleasant but shame both fountains just left to go to weeds. All in all.....certainly not worth the money

The hotel was in a lovely setting with pretty gardens. The room was large and comfortable and the staff were all very pleasant and helpful - all spoiled by the poor food.
Other Comments
The food was extremely poor. The choice was very limited at both dinner and breakfast and the quality of the food was very disappointing. For example the ribeye steak at dinner (£7.50 extra) was flavourless and tough.

Friendly and efficient welcome in to the hotel, at reception, with full explanation of Covid arrangements. A comfortable and warm room with nice facilities. Bar & Dining room staff were again welcoming, friendly and efficient. The set menue choice was good and our selected cources delicious. The one way system and well placed sanitation points made the place feel safe and relaxing. Set in nice grounds, the diabolical weather prevented a good stroll around. We would definitely go back, probably for a more extended stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed the whole stay . The hall itself is a beautiful building in a lovely location. We had dinner there which was excellent.
Other Comments
They are in the process of returning the rooms. We had a room which hadn’t yet been refurbed so was a little tired. Our friends had one of the refurbed rooms which was lovely. Because of the Covid 19 guidelines it was a bit weird in the dining room because the tables weren’t set etc. But as soon as all the tables were filled and set it was fine.

We bought an overnight deal with breakfast and dinner. The hotel is only a 40 min drive from home so very convenient. The staff were without exception attentive and delightful, despite the hotel being full of guests. The food was lovely, and the 4 adults in our party had an excellent stay.
