Why We Love It

  • The Strawberry Hill Gothic-style manor is in 500 acres of parkland, within sight of 14th-century Donnington Castle (where entry is free), and five minutes drive from the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Dating from the 18th century, the main house still features its original hand-painted wallpaper, intricate tapestries, and antique furniture
  • Donnington Grove has had several famous residents: it was the childhood home of Regency-era dandy Beau Brummell, and was later home to socialite and heiress Daisy Fellowes, a style icon known for her vast jewellery collection
  • The River Lambourne runs through the hotel's grounds, and fishing can be arranged for an extra charge
  • Its 18-hole, par-72 golf course was designed by Dave Thomas, who also worked on the Ryder Cup course at The Belfry
  • Newbury, a historic market town famous for its racecourse, is 10 minutes' drive away
  • You can take a stroll along the Kennet and Avon canal, an 87-mile-long waterway that extends from Bristol to Reading and passes through Speen (10 minutes' drive from the hotel)
  • Highclere Castle, as seen on TV series "Downton Abbey", is 15 minutes' drive away, and the National Trust's Basildon Park is 30 minutes' drive
Parking is free. Newbury railway station is less than 10 minutes' drive away.

No help offered to carry two bags up to third floor, steep stairs, no lifts in the(old building ) ourparty of four adults all in their mid seventies. Not shown properly around the beautiful large bedroom/ suit .Room 303 . Had to hunt for kettle and tea making equipment hidden away in a draw. Further search for a plug point to use ,had to be very supple and nimble to place the kettle plug in.. Hot water from basin tap was in my opinion very dangerous......the water was instantly of scolding temperature and could very easily caused burns / scolds to and persons skin, young or old...this ought to be checked out asap before some one suffers injury. From the third floor room to the restaurant was a total of 63 stairs in each direction. Despite the above the two day stay was very good with one of the most comfortable bedding have ever slept on. a very picturesque and beautiful part of the country with many interesting places to visit within. 5 - 20 miles.

We stayed in the summer house(s) and had fabulous rooms and views. Under floor heating kept the room at a great overall temperature. Ate in the bar and couldn't believe how reasonably priced it was. The meals, if anything, were too large for us, and good quality cooking. Couldn't fault it. The grounds are beautiful, and just one mile from Newbury town centre. Would definintely go back again.

For a change they also have it right with WiFi coverage which was very strong even though we weren't in the main building.

We enjoyed everything about our stay at this beautiful hotel. The staff were so welcoming and helpful. We found lots to do in the surrounding area. We went on long walks and came back to our warm, comfortable room. The breakfasts were delicious and the bar meals plentiful and good value. We'd visit again anytime.

The rooms are very old and tired. Badly in need of refurbishment. Once in the second room , remote control on TV did not work, The sink taps only provided hot and warm water no Cold! The intergrated sink plug was broken so was unable to drain water from the sink. Stains were evident on the white towels. The Hotel is very isolated with nothing in walking distance and the Bar shut at 9.30pm (on a Saturday night!) Only positives were that the grounds were quite nice and the breakfast was good. The staff at the reception tried to be as helpful as possible.
Other Comments
Our Room had no working heating and the window had been left open until our arrival (why!??) It was freezing. (literally the same temperature as outside which was about 5c!) When we raised the issue we were offered a small electric radiator that was unable to heat the very large old and poorly insulated room. We were finally moved to another smaller room that was heated.
