My wife and I enjoyed three nights at the Royal Hotel.
I suffered a serious and life threatening medical emergency, just before we were due to go, so we sought to change our booked dates. Travelzoo was sympathetic to this, but the Hotel Manger was less so and my wife had to strongly appeal to his better nature in order to amend our booking.
The hotel was clean and pleasant and well located for exploring Bath. The staff were friendly and both the breakfast and evening meals were tasty and well served. Our room was at the back of the hotel, but without a view. It was clean and comfortable with a spacious bathroom. The room lacked a wardrobe, however, and we had to make do with hooks and hangers. Being at the back of the hotel, there was no traffic noise, but we experienced a lot of noise from the railway during the night time as they carried out works. This was not the hotels fault of course, but the sort of thing that can occur at any city centre hotel.
Other Comments
The hotel exuded an old-fashioned charm, but its facilities all worked well.

Excellent location for 70th Birthday weekend as adjacent to Bath Spa Railway station and everything accessible on foot. Food excellent and staff really friendly. Hotel a bit tired but refurbishment programme going on. Nice touch storing luggage before and after checkin/check out. Overall, a good experience.

Paid extra for 4 poster bed which in most people's minds means a bed with 4 posts and a canopy, not a bed with just 4 corner posts! Apparently, canopies collect dust and have to be sent away for cleaning on a regular basis. Isn't that the reason for the surcharge? Very dissapointed. Beware weekend stays; nearby night club provides thumping music until early hours!

Very good. We were in room 101 which had a big step up from the bathroom to the bedroom. I did trip and did not hurt myself badly, but this could be very dangerous. This was the only negative.
