Why We Love It

  • Charles Cotton Hotel sits in the lush valley of the River Dove in Derbyshire
  • The village of Hartington is renowned for its blue cheeses and its links with poet and writer Charles Cotton, after whom the hotel is named
  • Arbor Low, a 4000-year-old Neolithic stone circle, is 10 minutes' drive away, and Dovedale National Nature Reserve's famous stepping stones are a 20-minute drive
  • The hotel is also 20 minutes' drive from the spa town of Buxton -- "a confection of Georgian terraces, Victorian amusements and parks" (Lonely Planet)
  • Three cycling and walking routes pass within 10 minutes' drive of the hotel -- the 13-mile Tissington Trail, the 17-mile High Peak Trail and the 8-mile Manifold Way Cycle Trail
  • Chatsworth House, a Baroque stately home on the banks of the River Derwent, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel
*Supplements apply to the Rump Steak, Sirloin Steak, Fillet Steak and Cheeseboard.

The attitude of some of the staff. We had a meal at the hotel on the first night of our 2 day stay. The meal was a simple vegetable curry & rice, with half inch thick naan bread; which I've never seen before, & was not very nice at all, although it was expensive. I was up all that night with sickness & diarrhea. My husband went down to breakfast the next morning & explained to various members of staff what had happened to me. It was food poisoning, but he was told it takes 48 hours for any symptoms of that to appear! We're not medically trained, but we know that's wrong. Not once did anyone say I'm sorry to hear your wife's been ill, or enquire how I felt; even as we checked out early as we didn't want to stay any longer than we had to. They were defensive from the start, & adamant it was not their food as no one else had been ill. I only saw one other couple go into the restaurant, so they may have had about 6 diners in all that night. We did not ask for any refunds, or be aggressive or rude to anyone. On our return home, & to add insult to injury they offered us a free meal in their restaurant. Needless to say we will not be making the 4 hour round trip to take them up on their offer !

The bathroom was tiny and the water pressure in the shower was weak, since we had a king room we would have expected a bit better. Otherwise room was spacious and bed very comfortable.
