Overview

The Green Dragon Hotel dates all the way back to the 11th century, when it housed the stonemasons who were building Hereford Cathedral. The 900 years since then have provided the hotel with a fascinating history of royal connections.

Hereford -- derived from the Welsh word for a river crossing -- is a city filled with history. It is believed that settlers first arrived in Hereford as far back as 676 AD. You can explore this history at the Mappa Mundi -- the world's largest medieval map -- and Chained Library Exhibitions at Hereford Cathedral, which is a 2-minute walk from the hotel. Hereford Cider Museum is less than 15 minutes' walk from the hotel, and the 18th-century Berrington Hall mansion and its gardens are a 35-minute drive away.

It is believed that Edward, Earl of March -- later to become King Edward IV -- used the hotel as his base throughout the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century, and that Owen Tudor was imprisoned at the hotel prior to his execution -- you can see his battle sword on display at the Town Hall.

The hotel underwent a £2.5 million refurbishment in early 2019. The new Superior Rooms feature a super king-size bed, USB charging sockets and other modern amenities. The Hereford Brasserie at the Green Dragon Hotel prides itself on showcasing the very best of local Herefordshire produce, from vodka and vegan wine to cheese and handmade scotch eggs. The Garrick Lounge is adorned with classic furnishings and cosy sofas -- perfect for afternoon tea -- while the stylish Offa Bar has a selection of locally produced ciders.

Surprisingly, the staff at breakfast (not met before) were a absolute joy. Greeting all guests warmly, and helpful and informative. The room was a beautiful one, classic in style and sympathetically decorated. The breakfast was excellent, and cooked to absolute perfection. Coffee was in abundance, to boot. It was such a contrast from our experience so far that it was easy to believe that it was a separate establishment; I thank chef and staff for a delightful last hour’s stay. They, and they alone, deserve this accolade.

Staff didn’t appear terribly pleased to greet guests, and several loud references to Travel Zoo with regards us, made us feel like second class clients. Arrival at the ‘tea’ room was equally belittling, as the member of staff responsible for delivery also stated loudly that we were ‘Travel Zoo people’. She informed us that chef had gone (we arrived an hour before end of tea), but she’d go and find him. We sat, waiting, and were then asked what drinks we’d like. It was a pot of tea for my friend, but my request for coffee was met with, “You can only have a cup”. It was abrupt and almost rude, and the said cup was finished by the time the ‘cream tea’ eventually arrived. A plate with jam and cream arrived, accompanied by something very difficult to describe; I took photos, and have asked people what they think they’re looking at. Most see ‘small, dark brown, overcooked roast potatoes’. Some lumps of leftover scones had been put back in the oven and forgotten about. They resembled, and had the solidity of, stones; if dropped, they could easily have cracked the plate. I asked, “Is that it?” The answer was a yes, as we were left sitting in shock. The staff member left the room, never to return, leaving me coffee-less to try to break open one of the rocks. There was ONE only sultana protruding from one of these stones...burnt black and solid. A gentleman at another table had been eating afternoon tea with his teenage children, and we could see much food left on the cake stand. He asked if he could please take the leftovers home. Within a few moments a toll of tin foil was slapped onto the table, before the staff member turned and left; the diners were aghast; the father had an impossible task of trying to secure a bundle of small foodstuffs, while his family looked on in disbelief We soon ceased trying to find parts of our scones to eat; no jam or cream were touched; there was no point. We decided to go outside the hotel to find somewhere to eat. We were certainly not going to chance eating in their very attractive restaurant after the tea fiasco. On entering the reception area, we encountered a male staff member and were able to demonstrate the burned, solid, misshapen scones. He listened, then watched as we hit the plate with rock-scones, finally laughing as he took the plate, put it down and walked away. It was becoming so unbelievable that we had to laugh. It wasn’t as if we were angry in our approaches. We were pleasant. Sadly, I was treating my friend to this experience as an Xmas gift, but it was proving to be anything but that. I explained this ‘ non-edible cream tea with no drinks’ to reception on booking out; they said, “Sorry”, and let us leave.

The hotel is in a central location in Hereford. The cream tea and breakfast was excellent. The room was at the back of the hotel and the bedroom was fine but the shower had no pressure, the bathroom was very small and shower/bath difficult to get in and out of due to lack of space. I felt we had been given a an inferior room as we booked through travelzoo. I would stay here again but would have to pay for an upgraded room with better facilities. Staff were ok but could have made more effort to make this a great experience. Overall a nice place to stay.
