The 5-star Pavillon de la Rotonde is an elegant retreat in the historic spa town of Charbonnières-les-Bains, which sits in a wooded river valley, around 10 kilometres from the centre of Lyon. The hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant is "a showcase of inventive Lyonnais cuisine" (The Daily Telegraph). There's also a brasserie for more casual dining. The luxurious spa features a heated pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna and a hammam with an essential oils diffuser. It's next door to the 19th-century Casino Lyon Vert.
The hotel is around a 20-minute drive from the charming city of Lyon, which is famous for its Roman and Renaissance districts -- the city's historic area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's a great base from which to explore France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and is around a 45-minute drive from the walled medieval town of Pérouges. There's also a railway station (Casino Lacroix-Laval) right next door to the hotel if you prefer not to drive.
