"The Royal Castle is one of Dartmouth's most iconic buildings" -- The Daily Telegraph

Why We Love This Hotel

  • The hotel is on the edge of Dartmouth's "picturesque" harbour, in "one of Devon's prettiest" riverside towns
  • The AA says it as "distinctly different" and has "considerable charm" -- it was originally four Tudor houses built on either side of a narrow lane
  • It still has original features such as spiral staircases, wooden beams, Tudor fireplaces and oil paintings
  • There is a traditional pub bar, a modern bar and an AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant with "unbeatably fresh fish" (The AA)

Overview

The Royal Castle Hotel has a "superb" (The Daily Telegraph) location on the edge of the "picturesque" harbour, in the riverside town of Dartmouth, which Lonely Planet calls "one of Devon's prettiest" towns.

Set within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this former coaching inn dates back to the 18th century, and comprises four former merchant's houses. It still has many of its original features, including spiral staircases, wooden beams, flagstone floors and fireplaces. Famous previous guests include Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Cary Grant

In Dartmouth's harbour, where hundreds of fishing boats and yachts bob on the water in front of the rolling hills on the other side of the estuary. Dartmouth high street is bustling with boutique shops, independent art galleries and little cafés, and is two minutes' walk from the hotel.

Dartmouth Castle is less than 30 minutes' walk away, along the River Dart. You can take a break at Bayard's Cove Fort to enjoy the views of Dartmouth and Kingswear or alternatively, you can catch a ferry from Dartmouth pier to Kingswear. From there you can catch the Dartmouth Steam Railway to Paignton

Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands -- "two of Devon's finest beaches", says The Daily Telegraph -- are less than 20 minutes' drive away.

The hotel has abundant "character and charm", says The AA. The traditional Galleon Bar serves pub classics and local ales, and there is also the modern Harbour Bar adjacent to it. Its AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant, The Grill Room, is on the first floor -- it has "hard-to-beat" views, and uses "unbeatably fresh" fish and "prime" local meat in its dishes.

All rooms are individually decorated. Non-River View Rooms have views of the town.
