With an ideal location, rooftop pool and highly regarded restaurant, Hotel Urban is an excellent choice for a short break in Madrid. You’ll be staying near the Gan Via, Puerta del Sol, and within walking distance of Old Town, the museum district and Retiro Park. The property was named in the Top 100 Southern Europe Hotels by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards in 2011. Guests are welcomed with a glass of bubbles in the stylish Glass Bar, which “serves some of the best cocktails in the city” (Elle).
Inside, the design is bold and contemporary with unique touches and antiques from the owner’s own collection scattered throughout the hotel. There is also a small museum area in the lobby with an impressive array Egyptian pieces. Upstairs in the bedrooms, the décor is less dramatic although you may come across a sculpture or two. Expect bronze bedspreads, dark wooden floorboards, free Wi-Fi, and powerful showers. The Loft Suite is particularly impressive with a separate mezzanine living area and 4-metre high window overlooking Carrera de San Jerónimo
In the morning a varied breakfast is on offer, with hot dishes prepared to order, an array of juice and good coffee. The Europa Decó Restaurant is widely regarded as one of the city’s favourite venues and while it may be pricier than a local tapas restaurant, it is not extortionate. Try the confided filet of black cod with a basil pil pil and red pesto, or the Iberian loin with peaches from Calanda. Plaza de Santa Ana and its tapas restaurants is also nearby and Sevilla and Puerta del Sol metro stations are a short walk.
During the summer, don’t miss the rooftop terrace with views over the city and a rooftop pool (unheated and only open in the summer). Cocktails and tapas are served until late. There is also a small gym and a steam room.
